Department Overview

Gas Operations is on a mission to become the safest, most reliable gas company in the U.S. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration, and emergency response.

The Portfolio Management & Engineering (PM&E) Lean team is an organization developed to execute and deploy Lean Management within a subset of Gas Operations.  The PM&E Lean team will partner with leadership to enable a management system for improving performance by reducing rework, resource waste, and simplify processes.  Our aim is to create systems that continuously improve our work performance, create greater transparency around the work plan, and empower employees to better execute in their role.

Lean Management is our approach to running Gas Operations and is focused on empowering all employees to make meaningful and on-going improvements that create efficient and engaging work. Creating a culture of continuous improvement directly supports core Gas Operations goals around safety, reliability, affordability, and sustainability.

The PM&E Lean Team is embedded within the line-of-business it supports and reports directly to the VP of Portfolio Management and Engineering in Gas Operations.

Position Summary

The Lean Coach role is pivotal to educating and empowering every employee in Portfolio Management and Engineering to identify, prioritize and solve problems impacting their work.  Coaches work directly with managers, supervisors and individual contributors to educate them on lean principles, build leadership capabilities and facilitate problem solving and continuous improvement. The Lean Coach will support development of deployment plans for the lean management tools.  They will provide training as needed to support implementation of new lean tools.  They will ensure deployment quality by periodically following up with specific teams to evaluate how teams are doing with tool implementation.  Lastly, they will provide direct coaching and feedback to supervisors and managers on best practices and how to improve adoption of lean tools within their teams.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead others in evaluating and measuring success of various business processes, practices and procedures, and identifies further opportunities for improvements.
  • Utilize Visual Management tools to track business process related metrics.
  • Effectively apply continuous improvement, Lean Six Sigma and project management processes, tools and methodologies to drive organizational improvements.
  • Develop/deliver Lean training materials to better support business needs.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis and problem solving sessions.
  • Present proposed recommendations and progress updates to leaders.
  • Ability to successfully negotiate between stakeholders to reach an agreement.
  • Plan and prioritize work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals.
  • Compile and analyze data, assist in development of system control and quality checks
  • Document work process and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science in Business, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • 6 years of project management, lean certification, program management, process improvement and/or business analysis

Desired:

  • 2 year PG&E Gas Operations line of business experience
  • Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement processes, methods, and tools
  • Strong project management knowledge and skills to lead project teams
  • LSS Green Belt or Black Belt
  • Understanding of root cause analysis and process improvement concepts, methods and techniques.
  • Creative problem solving skills to develop process solutions
  • Strong analytical and writing skills to justify process changes
  • Strong presentation and communication skills to deliver findings and recommendations to various levels of management
  • Knowledge and understanding of key process drivers affecting business results
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills
  • Adaptable to changing business conditions and ambiguity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Tableau, Visio or similar software
