Job Summary:
AES Distributed Energy (DE), a division of AES's US Strategic Business Unit (US SBU), is currently seeking an Electrical Operations Technician to provide on-site support of its 28MW-DC photovoltaic (PV) solar and 20MW/100MWhr Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility, AES Lawai'i, located on the island of Kauai. The goal of this position is to run day-to-day operations of AES Lawai'i. The technician will be responsible for a) monitoring daily operation performance of the facility, b) performing preventative and reactive maintenance on its equipment and the site and c) coordinating and managing any contractors engaged to support the maintenance activities.
The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in AC and DC electrical systems of varying types and voltages with a strong preference for candidates with experience working with BESS and PV solar systems. This position will be based at the AES Lawai'i facility on the island of Kauai and will support a growing portfolio of solar/BESS assets on Oahu and likely other islands.

- Troubleshoot faults, alarms, and underperformance within the facility and make appropriate repairs. This includes the replacement of components as needed (some components may weigh more than 100 pounds each).
- Conduct daily equipment checks to ensure facility availability and to satisfy the commitments of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). These checks will be carried out utilizing physical walk down of equipment, SCADA reporting, and on board diagnostics in association with operating software.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on the PV solar and BESS equipment.
- Communicate operations/maintenance events on a routine basis utilizing a combination of phone calls, emails, and daily production reporting.
- Participate in the construction/commissioning of the facility in which they will be encouraged to work closely with OEM to ensure best practices, turnover, and quality assurance is maintained throughout the process.
- Undergo training provided by the OEM(s) to obtain knowledge to successfully operate and maintain the equipment to the satisfaction of AES and all third-party O&M contracts for warranty.
- Acquire and retain vendors and third party contractors, to assist the facility, when maintenance activities exceed the on-site knowledge, capabilities, and/or certification levels.
- Perform site safety orientation as appropriate for all visitors and contractors to the facility.
- Create and maintain a consumables and critical spare parts list, submitting Purchase Requests as required to order new parts and consumables.
- Lead efforts to process warranty claims with specific vendors as needed.
- Appropriate Electrical trade qualification with at least 3-years working on utility scale electrical systems.
- College degree in a related field, a plus.
- Experience working with utility scale PV and Battery Storage systems, a strong plus.
- Trained and knowledgeable on the application of NFPA 70e regulations (arc flash/blast hazards) and the Lockout/Tagout/Grounding protocols for electrical systems.
- Experienced in electrical operations and troubleshooting of central inverters, DC power systems, HVAC equipment, fire suppression systems, SCADA & communication systems, DC/DC converters, high/medium/low-voltage switchgear, electrical inspections/testing methodologies and protection relays.
- Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend and troubleshoot from equipment/facility schematics.
- Experienced in outage management in the form of planning, procurement and scheduling to perform preventative and reactive maintenance.
