Take ownership and lead communications of the Mission and Vision to Operations personnel while setting individual and team expectations and performance goals. Lead the safe, reliable, and cost competitive operations of the facility with a passion for continuous improvement and environmental stewardship.
Major Responsibilities:
- The Operations Manager assumes the role of Chief Power Engineer as defined in the Power Engineering regulations
- Accountable for achieving targeted availability and reliability objectives
- Manage all operations-related supplier relationships including, but not limited to, chemicals, fuel, and water treatment services
- Accountable for the development and execution of Operations budgets
- Collect and evaluate Reliability Availability Maintainability (RAM) data in a consistent and accurate fashion
- Accountable for the development, implementation, and use of Operations Procedures required for the safe and reliable operation of equipment as well as emergency response, pressure component Quality Control (QC), environmental controls, waste management and compliance to regulations
- Develop departmental goals and KPI's from performance goals
- Monitor technical improvements to manage heat rate degradation and make improvement recommendations
- Responsible for updating operational component of Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Plan based on sound asset management planning
- Maintain communications and management of relationship with energy trading and ISO
- Responsible for recommending tools required by Operations for normal daily work, Preventative Maintenance (PM) work and to use for maintenance tasks.
- Identify primary operational risks for the facility and develop risk mitigation strategies where appropriate
- Manage the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) - Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) program and Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) program in compliance with requirements
- Ensure proper quality checks and audits are completed
- Responsible for compliance-related IS systems
- Provide accurate Environment & Safety (ES) reporting as required by corporate or regulatory rules
- Develop procedures and practices for site security and ensure security conforms to NERC CIP standards
- This position may include an on-call requirement
People Management:
- Provide leadership and mentoring for the operations team
- Ensure Operations personnel have all necessary skills and training needed and retain records of completion
- Set individual expectations for team
- Responsible for ensuring that the Operations staff is recruited and selected as required to meet the long-term operational needs of the facilities
- Ensure performance reviews take place as directed by ENMAX policies and procedures
- Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for plant, educating plant staff in the understanding of the measures
- Ensure direct reports understand and can communicate the corporate ES policies.
Education Required:
- A valid First Class Power Engineer certificate
- An undergraduate degree in a related field OR technology certificate in an engineering or science discipline from an accredited college or university would be an asset
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum of 8 years progressive work experience in power generation within combustion turbine, steam turbine and steam plant auxiliaries operation and maintenance or 10 years commensurate work experience performing related duties in an industrial environment
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience
- High level of operations knowledge and experience in high voltage electrical operation and digital control operation,
- Strong mechanical aptitude as well as a good understanding of mathematics and physics

- Demonstrated experience successfully handling multiple projects simultaneously, in a self-directed manner
- Exceptional communication skills; experienced and effective in interacting and articulating technical information with various stakeholders
- Strong drive to succeed; ability to efficiently utilize resources and challenge the status quo
- Adept at anticipating and resolving problems and challenges
