An opportunity has been made available for a Substation Design Engineer in the Substation Engineering team, with Project Development group. This position will appeal to individuals who are Professional Electrical Engineers (or eligible for registration with the Association) and have direct experience in the transmission utility industry. Ideal candidate should have some experience in the areas of substation design from the 25kV to 500kV levels, as well as an understanding of all disciplines of substations (i.e., Protection & Control, SCADA, Telecommunications, and Teleprotection). The Substation Design Engineer will be responsible for completion of designs on a wide range of projects including Capital Upgrade & Replacement projects and customer-driven Direct Assign projects. The Substation Design Engineer reports to Manager, Substation Engineering, Project Development.
Responsibilities
This role is responsible for:
- Creating detailed engineering scope documents from a high level functional document.
- Design of electrical substation facilities including site and buswork layouts, grounding, foundations, controls, protection, metering and equipment drawings for internal projects.
- Deliver accurate and thorough designs that meet applicable industry standards, AltaLink design standards and engineering practices.
- Ensure designs are compatible with good construction practices and overall due diligence.
- Prepare cost/time estimates when requested.
- Ensure accuracy of return data for records updates.
- Identification of material required, and in some cases specify devices and equipment to be used in the design and construction.
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
- Review the designs underway by external contractors to ensure compliance within scope and with AltaLink standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer registered with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA or Qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer with the APEGA.
- Ideally 4 years of direct experience in substation design, ranging from 25kV to 500kV but will consider hiring an EIT candidate.
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Broad understanding of Protection and Control (P&C), SCADA, Telecom, Teleprotection, as well as substation design.
- Knowledge of Microstation and Autocad would be an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment and develop strong internal and external relationships.
- Excellent time management and organization skills, ability to multi task.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
