Department Overview
Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.
Position Summary
The Utility Gas Service Representative duties include Company generated scheduled meter changes, Smart Meter module changes, atmospheric corrosion and non-hazardous leak repair and remediation on gas meters 630 CFH or less. Perform pilot relights as needed in connection with meter changes. Employees who have met the necessary training requirements may assist others in support of other work being performed.
This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E and is subject to collective bargaining. In addition, it is a Department of Transportation covered classification and is subject to random drug screening. Additional consideration may be given to candidates living within 30 minutes of headquarters.
Job Responsibilities
- Assists others in the Gas Service Department in performing gas metering work.
- Collects and verifies gas meter module information.
- Identifies broken seals, diversion, meter tampering, vandalism, lost meters and other instances of energy theft.
- Identifies and reports any abnormal operating conditions.
- Performs atmospheric corrosion inspections as part of their job duties.
- Performs Company generated scheduled meter changes, Smart Meter module changes, atmospheric corrosion and non-hazardous leak repair and remediation on gas meters 630 CFH or less.
- Performs pilot relights as needed in connection with meter changes.
- Turn offs and Shut-Off Non Pay residential gas only.
- Turns module radios on and off.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License (or higher) by Day 1 of hire
- Ability to work shift schedule
- Must pass a Post Offer Physical Assessment
- Record of Residence Must reside within 60 minutes of headquarters
- Internal PG&E Employees: Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB), Industrial Skills Test (IST), and Work Orientation Inventory (WOI) exams prior to application.
- External and Hiring Hall Candidates: Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB), Industrial Skills Test (IST), and Work Orientation Inventory (WOI) exams prior to interviewing
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of construction and maintenance terminology, processes, and procedures as needed to perform at the job level
- Record of Residence within 30 minutes of job or headquarters
- Experience in construction, plumbing, HVAC, auto mechanics, or basic electrical skills
- Current or previous relevant PG&E/Hiring Hall experience
- Excellent customer service skills, able to take direction well
