Department Overview
Applied Technology Services (ATS) is an internal service organization that provides high quality technical services and expertise on an as-needed basis to all business lines at Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), including the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP). Based at PG&E's San Ramon Technology Center, ATS is a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 120 engineers and technical personnel who perform work in the ATS San Ramon offices and laboratories, and in the field.
ATS Civil and Mechanical Engineering Services provides inspection, testing, and engineering services to support the PG&E system. Civil and Mechanical Engineering Services cover a wide range of work from Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to stress-strain measurement and analysis, for example in the subset of mechanical analysis. In the course of supporting the PG&E system, Civil and Mechanical Engineering Services has gained experience and expertise in various areas important to our clients. This expertise includes sound and vibration analysis along with expertise through extensive testing in support of startup and commissioning of Hydro Powerhouses, Power Plants, Gas Compressors, Power and Gas lines, all associated subsystems, etc..
Position Summary
The Expert Mechanical Engineer must have the ability to solve dynamics issues on an unlimited variety of any type of mechanical and electromechanical systems. Expertise in machinery dynamics including turbo and reciprocating machinery of all sizes and speeds, rotor dynamics, bearing design, modal analysis, structural vibration, strain analysis, hydraulics, gas dynamics, and acoustics is required. Controls and relay experience a plus. Experience in power equipment such as hydro and combined cycle turbomachinery and large gas transport and injection compressors, both turbo and reciprocating, is desired. This position combines testing and analysis expertise to deliver practical solutions to complex issues for a wide variety of internal clients. Candidates should possess the necessary skills to assess and understand the business needs of clients. Job Responsibilities
- Partners with senior peers and leadership to prepare estimates for client bid proposals
- Completes assignments of broad scope and complexity with few precedents or standards requiring integration of information from a variety of sources. Performs lead role in determining scope, schedule, budget and resources needed
- Provides some coaching and oversight to lower level peers. Reviews test designs of lower level peers to determine applicability, feasibility and if objectives of project will be obtained
- May assist higher level peers on the most complex and innovative tests
- Expands knowledge in other areas of specialty or discipline, developing breadth or further develops expertise and specialization on one area
- Collaborates with peers to prepare technical reports and specifications and to identify, define, and solve problems
- Completes multiple projects concurrently. Develops test protocols, models, technologies and analyzes data. Evaluates performance of parts, assemblies or systems under simulated operating conditions, and records results. Compiles project test results and prepares presentations and recommendations for client and/or ATS leadership
- Modifies electrical prototypes, parts, assemblies, and systems to correct functional deviations. Continually identifies testing or process improvements
- Identifies innovations and cost-reduction potential of new and existing technologies
- Determines customer expectations and ensures project deliverables meet customer satisfaction objectives
Environment and Working Conditions
- Mix of independent work environment and small team environment (i.e., 2-7 members) with team leader responsibilities
- Office and field environment that requires walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, infrequent climbing, and possible exposure to adverse weather and noise
- Procedural and process-oriented structure, due to regulatory and quality requirements
- Overnight travel of up to 50%
- Overtime, weekends and holidays, as needed
- Excellent driving experience. The group services the entire PG&E service territory which often requires drive times of up to 7 hrs. or more one way. Must be comfortable driving on uneven surfaces and in adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
- Job-related experience, 7 years
- Valid CA state driver's license
Desired:
- Master's degree
- Vibration Analysis experience and certification (expert level)
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of California
- Power generation experience
- Broad understanding of engineering research and testing concepts, theories, practices, methods, techniques in area of specialty as well as general understanding of other engineering specialties
- Understanding of quality assurance and control concepts and practices
- Experience with test instrumentation application and usage
- Strong investigative and analytical problem solving skills
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Competency in team leadership
