WHERE WE LIVE AND WORK:
The town of Smoky Lake is located in east-central Alberta and is home to just over 5,000 people. With close proximity to several lakes, residents of Smoky Lake have access to quality fishing and hunting opportunities, as well as great terrain for ATVing and snowmobiling. DESCRIPTION:
As a member of the District team, this position is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the distribution system, equipment and company facilities in accordance with ATCO Electric's standards, policies and procedures, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, and other regulatory requirements. This position is also key in the delivery of superior customer services and maintaining positive customer relations and will be expected to actively participate in setting and achieving personal and district goals. Assisting in the training of Apprentice Powerline Technicians is also required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Constructs, operates, inspects and maintains overhead and underground power lines, substation and related apparatus
- Constructs, operates, inspects installs and maintains street lighting systems, including poles, relays, lamps, ballasts
- Works on energized electrical circuits, including live line processes necessary to perform work
- Performs system switching, ensuring adherence to EOS and necessary clearances/permits are obtained
- Assists in the supervision of contracted labor
- Carries out maintenance and planned programs and system inspections in accordance with yearly plan and ensures proper documentation
- Assists electrical technicians in the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment
- Assists in commissioning new construction for compliance and operating needs
- Identifies and evaluates operating problems and assists in determining long term/short term solutions
- Performs standby duties, including emergency response
- Schedules outages and prepares switching orders
- Installs and uses electrical apparatus, including OVR, OCRs, gang switches, fusing
- Assists and participates in the budget process
- Interpret and applies applicable terms, conditions and policies
- Responds to customer service requests, retailer directed activities (connect, disconnect and collection), power quality issues, etc.in a complete and timely manner
- Investigate, assess and recommend corrective actions to customer complaints
- Participates and assists in the organization of company sponsored community relations activities
- Determine routing and coordination for hi-load moves
- Installs, verifies and reads electrical meters
- Shipping and storage of meters
- Completes to U/G locates and the required documentation
- Provides accurate field checks
- Adheres to applicable safety and environmental standards and regulations
- Performs safety audits and promotes safe work practices
- Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions
- Operates and maintains company vehicles and equipment
- Participates in safety meetings, helping to identify and resolve issues in a constructive manner
- Provides daily work plans and competes job safety analysis
- Promotes public safety awareness within the communities and industries through presentations and education
- Exercises good environmental practices
- Read, compile and maintain records, drawings as required
- May lead, coach and mentor apprentices and co-workers, as is required
- May be expected to work away from home base
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid Powerline Technician Certification at the Journeyman level or equivalent.
- Minimum 4 years experience through a Powerline apprenticeship program
- A valid class 5 driver's license required and ability to obtain Q endorsement an asset..
- Demonstrated safe work skills and commitment including knowledge of safe work and job planning procedures.
- Excellent organization and planning skills.
- Excellent customer relations skills.
- Strong interpersonal, team participation and communication skills.
- Sufficient willingness, skills and experience to train apprentices.
- Sound computer skills including Mobile TC & Viewer, MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Experience and willingness to participate in community activities.
- Ability and willingness to undertake employee-in-charge responsibilities as required.
- Ability to work with little to no supervision while performing trouble shooting and power restoration.
- Prior knowledge of franchises and REA's is an asset.
The successful candidate will be expected to reside within in the recognized boundaries of the Smoky Lake area and provide after-hours service coverage. (Please refer to Policy G80 for full details). This position may require the candidate to work away from home base.
This position will require the successful candidate to be able to work in the following work conditions: work at heights, carry and lift up to 75 lbs, climb poles, work in awkward positions, work outdoors, climb in/out of equipment, operate heavy equipment and operate tools that cause vibration.
