Position Overview
Primary Responsibilities include: Performs any combination of following tasks in foundry concerned with melting metal,
pouring metal into molds, removing castings from molds, dressing castings, moving foundry materials, and cleaning
equipment and work areas: Moves sand, castings, flasks, or other materials about foundry by hand, using wheelbarrow or
cart, or by loading them onto conveyor.
- Duties and Responsibilities
- Furnace Tender (FT) - Loads metal ingot and scrap (remelt) into furnaces. Sprinkles graphite over molten metal in furnace. Skims
- slag from metal in furnace using long metal rod with hand strainer on end. May transfer molten metal into large pig molds at times.
- Uses a long metal bar to clean out slag residue from furnace at the end of each heat. Uses pneumatic hammer to clean and repair
- furnaces when needed. Drags dross pans to staging area. Assists in pour off and shakeout duties.
- Pour off (PO) - Pours molten metal into molds by use of pouring devices. The pouring device would require the rotating of a large
- wheel to raise and tilt the ladle while pouring metal into a mold. Skims slag off top of metal using hand strainer. Pulls ladle along
- overhead monorail to pouroff area. Chips molten residue from ladle with metal rod. Uses broom and/or shovel to clean work area.
- Drags dross pans to staging area. Assists in furnace tender and shakeout duties.
- Shakeout (S) - Moves sand, castings, flasks, or other materials about foundry by hand, wheelbarrow, cart, or by conveyor.
- Assembles flasks. Pulls mold carts to conveyor and dumps molds onto conveyor. Pulls jackets off conveyor with metal rod. Sorts
- jackets and castings. Uses broom and/or shovel to clean work area. Assists in furnace tender and pour off duties. Places and
- removes mold jackets on sand molds. Unstops castings in dump conveyors when they hang up.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience
- Must have 6 months minimum foundry experience.
Education
- High School Diploma in General Studies
