Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.

A shift or straight day employee who is responsible for operating, maintaining, and servicing of all underground storage facilities, Compressor Station facilities, transmission lines and appurtenant facilities with or without supervision.

The operator is responsible for all station routing changes using SCADA and manual and automatic valves in conjunction with pneumatic, electronic, and computer-based control systems and compressor.

This position is a DOT covered classification and is subject to random drug screening.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, extended hours, nights, weekends, and/or overtime (scheduled or ad hoc)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a minimum
  • Ability to work shift schedule
  • Willingness to work in remote locations
  • Internal PG&E Employees: Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB), Industrial Skills Test (IST), and Work Orientation Inventory (WOI)* prior to application. Must qualify on the Console Operator Basic Requirements Assessment (COBRA) exams prior to interview
  • External and Hiring Hall Candidates: Physical Test Battery (PTB), Industrial Skills Test (IST), Work Orientation Inventory (WOI)*, and Console Operator Basic Requirements Assessment (COBRA) exams prior to interviewing
  • Note: Employees applying via URA do not need to meet requirement if held same or higher classification in the line of progression.

Desired Qualifications:

  • To better represent the communities we serve, applicants who live within 50 miles of the headquarter listed will be given preference
  • Experience in natural gas transmission or natural gas distribution field
  • Experience performing data entry on a computer system
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via radio and phone
  • Strong ability to understand and apply technical concepts and procedures
  • Strong ability to successfully perform multiple tasks under pressure

Responsibilities

Operating and service duties include: monitoring, taking reads from various meter and gauges, starting and stopping equipment. Shall have thorough knowledge of operating principles, equipment and operating procedures, safety rules and general operating orders. Shall be able to operate all facilities in automatic, semi-automatic and manual modes. The Station Operator is responsible for all station routing changes using SCADA and manual and automatic valves in conjunction with pneumatic, electronic, and computer-based control systems and compressors.

Assists in training and instructing other employees in proper operating techniques

Maintenance duties include: routine repair; greasing valves, cleaning separators, changing filters, repairing leaks, and providing assistance as needed. Assist in performing, testing and operating equipment. In addition, will be required to perform station security, cleaning, painting and housekeeping duties, and assist with material handling. Performs paperwork, as needed in the facility.

Specific Duties: Compiles and generates reports using computer equipment and software. Updates various logs as required by PG&E standard practices. Clearances: writes, reviews, and facilitates approval through Gas System Operations (GSO) of all clearances at the facility. Takes appropriate action in emergency situations, including emergency personnel "callouts." Manages all base radio communications, telephone and PC logging activities and takes appropriate action when necessary. Monitors and processes data pertaining to gas operations such as, but not limited to, gas quality and SCADA. Assists in Station Operator training for new and existing Station Operators. May perform work at remote locations to monitor and operate gas facilities.
