Position Summary
This is a temporary position involving various duties that permit exposure to the student's field of study and or/provide experience that is useful addition to the student's education and meaningful preparation for future professional employment. Under immediate direction and under work guidance of Mentor, assist and supports departments in development of business projects.
Intern welder will observe/assist welders as they make weld repairs on boiler tubes, boiler piping, valves, etc. These repairs are made by certified welders using approved specific welding procedures. Intern welder will observe/assist welders as they disassemble, repair and set boiler safety valves and repair or replace other steam cycle valves when they develop leaks. Intern will learn how a Welder performs preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure power plant reliability and safety. Intern welder will observe/assist welders as they manage the welding rod inventory to make sure the materials are stored properly in a heated cabinet to remain moisture free. Everyone's number one priority of the day is to follow all Safety guidelines and procedures while performing these jobs.
Tasks and Responsibilities
High quality professional day-to-day execution of special projects
Assist in brainstorming and idea planning
Network-Meet a variety of people in your chosen profession through your internship, allowing you to form relationships you can build on in the future
Learn and master internal operations, including but not limited to accounting, event planning, finance, human resources, payroll, marketing, relationship building, customer service, sales, daily operations, etc
Identify areas for process improvement
Make recommendations to leadership for streamlining systems and processes
Research and implement solutions for enhanced efficiency
Ability to manage and organize multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Attend 6:30 a.m. Safety meetings and perform stretching exercises;
- Foreman assigns work orders to the journeyman, the intern will accompany the journeyman to get LOTO on equipment, make repairs, clean work area, and return equipment back to operations;
- The Intern will perform duties similar to welding trainee duties;
- The Intern will learn how to identify tools and equipment used in the Welding industry;
- The Intern will learn proper cleaning and care for an oxygen/acetylene Torch set, 480-volt welding machine, power tools, tape measure, and hand tools;
- The Intern will learn how to identify different welding materials and some of the various applications of each;
- The Intern must be physically fit and able to lift 40 lbs, climb stairs and ladders as needed;
- The work area is sometimes on elevated platforms or steel grating with handrails.
- Assist journeyman in making repair or replacement of boiler tube.
- Assist journeyman disassemble and inspect or repair safety valve/s
- Assist journeyman inspect heater/s for leaks and make repairs as needed
- Assist journeyman repair and/or replace expansion joint
- Assist journeyman cut out and replace leaking or damaged valve/s
- Assist journeyman disassemble regulator valve for inspection and repair
- Assist journeyman making repairs to bowl mill including replacing cone section
- Assist journeyman replacing piping in and around plant area
- Assist journeyman repacking leaking valve
- Assist journeyman walk down job scope for LOTO process
- Assist journeyman keep job site clean and free of any hazards
- Assist journeyman and foreman in keeping rod cabinets full with the appropriate rods
- Assist in keeping the shop clean and orderly
Assist in keeping portable welding machines full of fuel and oil checked on a regular basis or before or after every use
