This is the specialist level (above career level) of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. Incumbents function in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently. Progression to this level is typically restricted on the basis of business need.

Corporate NERC/SERC Engineer:  This position is for a Corporate Component Engineer responsible for implementation of fleet NERC / SERC Strategies. The position is located in the Charlotte Corporate Office and reports directly to the Manager of the Electrical Components group in the Corporate Office. The position is a normal office working environment with possible call outs to support site emergent activities.

Responsibilities Include:   

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems at a corporate or industry level in their area of expertise 

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where little to no standardization exists; handles unique situations which require searching for solutions which may have corporate or industry impact 

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability  to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to a  corporate  or industry level  in their field of expertise 

  • Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating high-impact complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the company's competitive position

  • Provides site support as a subject matter expert including consultation, peer reviews, oversight, and participation on assessment and cause evaluation teams, as needed

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files

Qualifications

Basic/Required Qualifications: 

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.  A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree

  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience

  • EITHER a Professional Engineer registration OR one of the following: a Master's Degree in a technical discipline, SRO certification, an RO or SRO license or Technical Nuclear certification 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • An expert in engineering theories and principles in their field

  • An expert in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Demonstrated Project management skills

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Mastery of existing and emerging organizational technologies, issues, processes and practices

  • Demonstrated leadership within Duke Energy and in the Industry

  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work

  • Demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities
