Position Summary
The Sundance power plant is a large coalfired electrical generating facility in western Canada with six generating units, located about 70 kilometers west of Edmonton, Alberta.
Sundance's six generating units (boiler, turbine and generator) provide 2,141 megawatt (MW) of generating capacity. Coal for the station is sourced from the TransAlta Highvale Coal Mine that is neighboring to the power station. A portion of the plants' output is provided to customers under power purchase agreements and the remainder is marketed by TransAlta in the deregulated, wholesale Alberta power market. As part of the company's coal to gas transition strategy announced April 19, 2017, two of the six generating units will be placed out of service in January 2018. Remaining units are planned for possible conversion from coal-fired to natural gas-fired generation in the 2021 to 2023 timeframe.
