IT FIELD SERVICES TECH - LEVEL I

Under close or general supervision requiring on-going review, the expectation of this position is to perform basic field construction, maintenance and repairs related to the Transport layer of the APS Enterprise Network.  Track and report progress on assignments.  May support the evaluation and testing of new equipment, the development/implementation of test procedures, and/or the design and construction of specialized configurations.  Activities will generally be of limited scope when performed individually, progressing in complexity over time and demonstrated accomplishment.  Develop an increasing level of job proficiency through self study, professional instruction and on-the-job training as required to learn and perform all functions of job.

IT FIELD SERVICES - LEVEL II

With general direction, perform work related to the construction and implementation of engineered network designs, design support activities, assigned maintenance, and network system/equipment repairs.  Technicians will function across multiple disciplines dispersed over a broad scope of assigned areas and technologies.  The Enterprise Network is comprised of a wide variety of technologies that are spread across a large geographic area.  The technologies and equipment inventory spans mobile radio, microwave, fiber optics, multiplexers, protective relaying schemes, telephone systems, video/data transmission, Sonet Networks, DACCS systems, security systems and all forms of desktop/mobile computing environments.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - LEVEL I

High School diploma or equivalent certificate of completion.  Demonstrated basic proficiency in electric and/or electronic theory, along with a general knowledge of math and science necessary to support various radio, telephone and data communication systems.   Basic understanding of AC/DC theory and grounding practices.  Possess a functional knowledge of telephone systems, telephony equipment installation practices and troubleshooting methods.  Working knowledge of computers, printers and associated computing peripherals.  Good decision making, planning and organizational skills, with the ability to deliver effective written and verbal communications.  Position requires individuals to be capable of operating 4X4 vehicles w/ standard transmissions on primitive roads where extremes of desert heat and high altitude snow and/or ice may be encountered.  Requires the ability to install chains; operate or utilize a variety of other types of snow equipment such as snow cats, snow mobiles, and snow shoes depending upon area of assignment; and work at remote locations.  Valid state driver's license is required.  All individuals are expected to be available for call out 24/7days a week and to be able to work out of town or outside of primary reporting area.    May be called upon to climb and perform work on communication towers, which can be in excess of 250 feet in height.  If tasked to do so, there is a physical requirement, which includes being medically cleared to safely conduct this activity along with successfully passing an initial tower climbing training class, followed by an annual refresher there-after.  Certain work situations  require the need to operate 4X4 vehicles w/ standard transmissions on primitive roads.  Work alone in remote locations where conditions will often include the extremes of desert heat, high altitude snow and ice.  Many job tasks will take place with Power Substations and other EHV exposed areas.    Desired additional attributes include:     - Radio communications/telephony education and/or working experience.  - FCC radio operator license is highly desired  - Previous work experience requiring mechanical aptitude and the safe usage of common hand tools.    - Familiarity in Drafting or Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).    Nuclear requirement: Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.  This is a condition of employment at PVNGS.  Roles and Responsibilities defined in Policy 1503 and implementing policy guide are applicable to all PVNGS employees.

Associate degree in electronic technology or equivalent educational course of study and/or working experience, plus an additional minimum of two (2) years of fundamental level experience in the areas of radio communications, telephony, data/network systems technologies or computing systems; performing installation, testing, maintenance and repair actions.  Individual should have a strong understanding of computing platforms, operating systems, software applications and distributed computer networks.  Must demonstrate ability to make sound decisions, possess good planning, organizational and communications skills, both oral and written.  Possess an effective understanding of electronic theory and circuit analysis. Position requires individuals to be capable of operating 4X4 vehicles w/ standard transmissions on primitive roads where extremes of desert heat and high altitude snow and/or ice may be encountered.  Requires the ability to install chains; operate or utilize a variety of other types of snow equipment such as snow cats, snow mobiles, and snow shoes depending upon area of assignment; and work at remote locations.  Valid state driver's license is required.  All technicians are expected to be available for call out 24/7days a week and to be able to work out of town or outside of primary reporting area.     May be called upon to climb and perform work on communication towers, which can be in excess of 250 feet in height.  If tasked to do so, there is a physical requirement, which includes being medically cleared to safely conduct this activity along with successfully passing an initial tower climbing training class, followed by an annual refresher there-after.      Highly desired skills and certifications include:     - General Radio Telephone Operator FCC license,   - Nortel PBX, Nortel CC6 Administrator Training, Nortel CC6 Engineering/Configuration, Nortel Contact Center Networking.  - Familiarity with the use of Auto Cad and Visio.  - Understanding of wireless networks, 802.11x protocol, controllers and Access Points, Packet switching/frame relaying.  - Understanding of Call/Contact Center and PBX applications and systems.    Nuclear requirement: Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will  be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.  This is a condition of employment at PVNGS.  Roles and Responsibilities defined in Policy 1503 and implementing policy guide are applicable to all PVNGS employees.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. As directed and with close supervision, perform basic construction, maintenance and repair work on all various types of communications, networking, computing and telephony equipment.
  2. Resolve minor failures and impairments in a timely, effective and efficient manner within all areas of the transport layer of the APS Enterprise Network.  Adjust priorities with minimal notice.
  3. Perform routine equipment maintenance and perform emergency repairs as needed and as directed.
  4. Complete construction work assignments, which may include some review of delivered engineering to ensure functionality and maintainability is achieved.  Installs new equipment, participates in shakedown testing, alignment, placing equipment into service, providing written and verbal reports, updating technical drawings, meeting in-service schedules, striving for accuracy related to post-construction documentation and assigned budgetary guidelines. 
  5. Individual must be able to work under the direction of more tenured technicians, I/S Field Service Technician Seniors and engineers.
  6. Track and report progress on assignments.  If solicited, provide information and/or produce reports to assist with project construction estimates.  Produce damage assessment reports, repair actions and implementation results to ensure that user needs are met.
  7. May provide assistance to engineering personnel and manufacturer representatives in the evaluation and testing of new equipment, including the development/implementation of test procedures and/or the design and construction of specialized configurations that may be needed in order to meet unique business requirements.
  8. Ensure full compliance with all regulatory agencies.  Produce reports and technical drawings for system documentation and maintain required recordkeeping.
  9. Perform all work in a safe manner, appropriate to the work environment and conditions.  Maintain full compliance with all safety policies, procedures and standards.  Demonstrate and promote safe work practices, fully participating in departmental and company safety programs.
  10. Initiate action to report or resolve unsafe conditions when observed or identified.
