Identify vulnerabilities in IEC 61850 Sampled Values-based substation automation with new RTDS® Simulator features

October 18, 2021

The RTDS® Simulator is the world standard for real-time digital power system simulation. Real-time simulation allows power system innovators to conduct highly efficient EMT studies and perform hardware-in-the-loop testing on protection and control equipment. In the modern digital substation, closed-loop testing is of particular importance. IEC 61850 and other communication standards, which are increasingly relied upon for critical measurements and operations, are vulnerable to network disruptions and cybersecurity issues. Testing IEC 61850-compliant devices in the laboratory environment allows power system engineers to comprehensively validate performance and identify vulnerabilities in substation automation schemes prior to deployment.

The RTDS Simulator's GTFPGA Unit, with its SV firmware, allows users to publish and subscribe to large quantities of Sampled Values streams simultaneously. Recent innovations to the GTFPGA-SV firmware have increased the scope of hardware-in-the-loop testing for IEC 61850-9-2 and IEC 61869-9 Sampled Values based schemes.

  • Up to sixteen SV streams can be simultaneously subscribed to and published using just one GTFPGA Unit. Additional GTFPGA Units can be used to scale this number up.
  • All output sampling rates listed in the standard are supported. When running the GTFPGA-SV component in the Substep environment, a 250 kHz sampling rate is supported, making the component suitable for ultra-high bandwidth HVDC applications.
  • It is now possible for the user to perform real-time manipulation of the SV streams and/or data. Streams can be subjected to delay, packet duplication, packet swap, and can be stopped and resumed on demand. Positive or negative jitter with a resolution of 10 ns can be applied to each streams, simulating a variance in latency with high precision. There are twelve options for data manipulation, allowing the user to change the source or destination MAC address, application or VLAN I.D., length of packet, and more. These manipulation options emulate network and cybersecurity issues that are inevitable in the modern digital substation.

These industry-leading options for SV streaming and manipulation will significantly improve the experience and results for power engineers performing hardware-in-the-loop testing with SV-compliant protection and control systems, preventing cascading failures that can result from non-genuine or non-ideal SV streams and network disruptions.

The RTDS Simulator's GTFPGA Unit has several functionalities, including the testing of IEC 61850 Sampled Values-compliant devices
