A unique monitoring program that is improving worker safety at OPG's Darlington Nuclear station has been recognized with a key industry award from U.S.-based Edison Electric Institute (EEI).

OPG has received a 2025 Thomas F. Farrell, II Safety Leadership and Innovation Award from the U.S.-based Edison Electric Institute.

OPG received the 2025 Thomas F. Farrell, II Safety Leadership and Innovation Award in the EEI International Member Company Project category at an event in New Orleans in early June.

The award recognizes OPG for its innovative use of remote Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature sensors. The specialized technology continuously monitors environmental conditions at Darlington, helping assess and prevent heat stress in workers as they perform duties inside the reactor vault for the station's ongoing refurbishment. The program is enhancing employee safety and helping to support better work planning.

Working in hot environments, including inside power generating stations, may place excessive stress on the body's cooling system. When combined with physical work, loss of fluids, some medical conditions and fatigue, it may lead to heat-related illness.

The unique innovation was a collaboration between OPG's Health and Safety department, X-Labs innovation division, and the CanAtom Power Group, a joint-venture advancing the Darlington Refurbishment project.

EEI is an association that represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies. In addition to its U.S. members, EEI has more than 70 international electric companies as International Members, including OPG.

The Thomas F. Farrell, II Safety Leadership and Innovation Award recognizes the contributions of leadership and innovation to the advancement of safety in the energy industry. Recipients of the award are selected by a panel consisting of leadership from the labor, contractor, and academic communities, as well as U.S. regulatory agencies and EEI senior leadership.
