Description
Job Code: C18-0001

Qualifications: The Finance Organization (Finance) has a partnership with LaGuardia Community College and the Borough of Manhattan Community College whereby students obtain real-life work/learning experience while obtaining three academic credits (which is required for their curriculum). The students are unpaid but receive a transportation stipend from the Company. The students' internship is a relatively short period of time - approximately 20 to 24 hours per week for about 10 to 12 weeks during the Fall, Spring & Summer Semesters. The students are assigned to various sections within Finance where they obtain observational learning, as well as hands-on learning. Their assignments differ depending on the section they are assigned to. Their working environment is highly supervised, where they receive on-the-job training and coaching sessions from their supervisor. Often, they are required to read and study General Accounting Procedures, Operating Procedures, and Corporate Instructions to familiarize themselves with their job functions, as well as taking on-line learning courses. Their observational learning affords them the opportunity to see the differences in accounting learned in books vs. actual general accounting and utility accounting in a professional setting. They frequently observe meetings and are given the opportunity to ask questions. They are thrilled to be given the opportunity to apply and enhance many of the skills, like Microsoft Excel, they obtained in a classroom in a business application. The same is true for their exposure and minimal use of other corporate and accounting systems. In addition, our Finance supervisors invest many hours with the students and the internship program. Their time is spent interviewing, explaining accounting theory and processes, training, reviewing work, meeting with college coordinators, and completing assessment forms. Our managers are providing a professional contribution to the business community, and specifically the finance field, while acting as role models in cultivating the next generation of professionals.
