About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison's (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE's 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview:

The Principal Manager will report to Director of Grid Technology & Modernization, and will oversee a highly technical organization that integrates initiatives and studies that focus on research, early development and analyzing the costs and benefits of emerging technologies.  These technologies include but are not limited to distributed energy resources, grid and customer data analytics, advanced control and automation, sytem modeling, energy storage systems, and electric transportation. Additional responsibilities including developing strategic partnerships to assist in the applied research work, developing whitepapers and articles to publish findings, outlining the feasibility and scope of potential pilots, determining corporate value, customer benefits, and policy outcomes. The results of the applied research work will result in informing the Grid Modernization roadmap, determining the business case and feasibility of technology pilots, develop technology maturity assessements, develop new advanced and innovative concepts that have not been tested.

The leader will be required to effectively coordinate across OUs, overseeing and developing employees that have very specific knowledge in highly technical areas. The outcome and results of the organization will ensure that SCE establishes a leadership and influential role for the future grid through the production of innovative and cutting edge content. Thus, the PM will need to possess a unique combination of organizational, managerial, and communication skills, in addition to having sufficient technical knowledge in order to collaborate internally and externally, build strong teams, and represent the Company effectively in technical forums.The leader will be required to effectively coordinate across OUs, with an emphasis on the more forward looking strategic parts of the Company, and the industry externally. Through this engagment, the PM will help to support SCE's Strategic Technical roadmap, invite key partners, and provide leading content to drive technical innovation. 

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Lead emerging grid-related technologies assessment and evaluation functions, as required for the grid of the future.
  • Advance business objectives, through assessing value streams, and impact analysis of emerging technologies.
  • Develop strategic research partnerships including but not limited to Academia, National Labs, other utilities, DOE, Grid Architecture alliances, IEEE, EPRI. Partners will help SCE to participate in collaborative research opportunities.
  • Oversee and document results in research white papers, articles, and conceptual applications that will inform and influence the industry representing key areas in DER/DSO/clean energy.
  • Ensure organization performs analysis to determine benefits of emerging technology opportunities and applications. Propose integrated pilots in support of SCE's objectives.
  • Work collaboratively across SCE to develop concept integration plans that describe how the results of applied technology evaluation will potentially change SCE's design, engineering, operations, programs that include impact assessments at the OU level.
  • Develop EPIC and grant strategies that are integrated across SCE.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor the subject matter experts in their own personal development. Facilitate organizational functions and develop key relationships.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering
  • Ten or more years managing technical organizations or leading major technology projects.
  • Three or more years of experience working with power system, IT, and business applications.
  • Five or more years of experience building strong teams and building a positive work environment.
  • Five or more years of experience creating effective oral and written communications in a professional work environment.

Desired qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience developing effective policy positions related to technology
  • Masters in Electrical Engineering or Business Administration
  • Licensed PE in California.
  • Five or more years of experience work with California energy policy.
  • Three or more years of experience with distribution and transmission advanced technologies in the areas of distributed energy resources, renewable generation, energy storage, grid analytics, power system modeling and simulation, protection and control, and automation.

Comments:

  • Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
