About Transmission and Distribution:

Southern California Edison's (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE's 5 million customer accounts.

Position overview:

The Transmission and Distribution Safety Specialist (SES's) will support safety and safety compliance and help to develop, implement and monitor safety programs, share communications, standards, procedures and processes to protect the health and safety of our employees. SES's provide safety guidance, safety monitoring and safety policy/rule interpretation for T&D construction projects and normal and major operations throughout the Edison territory. The successful candidate will also act as the point of contact for T&D employees for all work items with safety-related implications.

Typical Responsibilities Include:

  • Conduct safety inspections and audits in the field, yards and facilities to ensure safe work practices and program compliance during normal and emergency conditions.  Collaborate with SCE representatives to discuss positive observations, and observations requiring corrective actions and follow up.  Continuously monitor activities and support assigned groups as needs exist.   
  • Support groups within the assigned area of responsibility in the development, review and execution of safety programs. This would include providing guidance and support to ensure SCE program execution; supporting the development of site specific plans and procedures; participating in job walks and project kick-off meetings as a technical expert to reinforce safety requirements and expectations; reviewing safety programs to ensure compliance with SCE rules and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in meetings to guide decisions and support assigned groups in all matters involving safety to ensure safety and compliance.  Conduct research and provide innovative ideas for developing cost effective solutions and management of safe work practices.
  • Support assigned organizations in reporting, investigating, reviewing, and commenting on incident documentation to ensure accurate reporting of the incident sequence of events, contributing factors, root cause, and corrective actions.  Ensure corrective actions are appropriate, measurable and that adequate oversight is in place to validate continued compliance.  
  • Provide weekly and monthly briefs to management on the status of assigned areas of responsibility including but not limited to areas that are working well or those that need improvement such as incidents, program compliance, and involvement by OU's performance.  
  • Support assigned organizations in the interpretation of Federal, State, local and SCE safety rules, policies and procedures to provide guidance and ensure compliance and effective application of safe work practices.  
  • Maintaining a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practices; and performing other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must have five or more years of experience in construction, maintenance, or operation-related transmission, substation, and/or distribution Electrical System methods and standards.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License

Desired qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental, Health and Safety or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience participating in safety investigations, determining root causes, and recommending solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and/or conducting safety training programs.
  • Demonstrated experience providing consultation services and assistance to all levels of staff throughout an organization.
  • Demonstrated experience performing analyses and making recommendations for improvements in work methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide functional direction and training to cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAL/OSHA and other governmental regulations relating to the electric utility industry.
  • Must be able to provide 24 hour, 7 days per week emergency response/storm response for T & D within a designated area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience making recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience consulting with clients, including independently identifying client needs, developing action plans, identifying deliverables, and presenting results.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to integrate work across relevant areas, develop the business and services to enhance customer satisfaction and productivity, manage risks appropriately, develop and execute business plans, manage information, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers. 
  • Must demonstrate effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation. 
  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices. 

Comments:

  • Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • The successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at an alternate work location.
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties
