Department Overview

Through its Electric Vegetation Management (VM) Program, PG&E dedicates hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of workforce hours to help reduce electrical outages and wildfire risks.  PG&E meets or exceeds all applicable federal and state vegetation clearance requirements and performs regular power line tree safety activities in accordance with industry standards, guidelines and procedures to reduce outages or fires caused by trees or other vegetation. PG&E's 70,000 square-mile service area includes approximately 123 million trees with potential to grow or fall into overhead power lines. PG&E inspects and monitors every overhead electric transmission and distribution line each year, with some locations patrolled multiple times (18,000 transmission miles plus 81,000 distribution miles is about 100,000 miles of T&D lines).PG&E prunes or removes approximately 1.4 million trees annually.  Across our Northern and Central California service area, this work is performed by more than 3,800 PG&E employees and contractors, including experts educated and trained in arboriculture; approximately 250 have International Society of Arboriculture certifications.

Position Summary

Tree work brings high risk potential, even in the best of circumstances. This is a critical role, as utility vegetation work combines two high risk occupations, namely logging and work near high voltage electric lines. The successful candidate will:

  • Develop department-wide policies and procedures for safety
  • Provide subject matter expertise on a variety of safety disciplines
  • Maintain knowledge of, interpreting regulatory compliance with safety and health regulations, policies, and organizational safety and health programs
  • Lead safety process improvement initiatives as needed
  • Partner with lines of business to implement safety programs
  • Oversee process and procedure development, implementation and communication

This position's headquarter will be decided upon hire (based on the candidate identified).

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans, manages, and controls the activities ofthe Vegetation Management contractor safety program
  • Plays a lead role with IBEW on safety and workforce development initiatives
  • Develops and manages contracts, outside service vendors or others as required to support the safety programs of the organization.
  • Works and interacts with outside regulatory agencies in the development of new regulatory requirements via the State of California Standards Board or with Cal-OSHA investigators while conducting serious incident investigation.
  • Analyzes, reports, and provides recommendations and develops strategies to improve quality.
  • Participates in employee selection, career development, succession planning and training.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert.
    • Acts as primary VM interface with Corporate Safety and Contractor Safety
    • Manages variance reviews

Supports and implements the S1/S2 process for safety.
