The Dow Chemical Company's Technical Expertise and Service department has an exciting and challenging opportunity  for a Piping Engineer Lead located at St. Charles Operations in Hahnville, Louisiana. The successful candidate is responsible for serving as a discipline lead for the Piping Group and overseeing technical scope on site executed capital and expense projects from Project Definition through Construction.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Effectively plan and organize work including setting priorities for Piping Engineers and Designers to meet discipline specific project execution milestones and report physical progress of deliverables. This includes but not limited to:
    • Developing, maintaining, and tracking cost estimates (material and engineering work hours) for all stages of the project life cycle.
    • Demonstrating adequate project control systems to allow schedule and cost forecasting as well as robust change control. 
    • Developing layouts and conducting reviews to consider constructability, operability and maintainability of the facility.
    • Ensuring that Dow's designs consistently comply with applicable industry codes, standards, environmental, Safety and Dow global practices and specifications.
    • Identifying and managing risk, including IP protection and export control aspects.
    • Document key discipline measurements and learning experiences into Lessons Learned application.
  • Develop Piping Stress Analysis.
  • Working in a multi-discipline, team environment with both face-to-face communication and virtual software.
  • Work with Pipe Material Specifications and the piping components to ensure that we have the most effective technology and cost advantage.
  • Coaching discipline members on application of the Global Project Methodology and the work process discipline for their discipline.
  • Experience in the design of component and system calculations for pressure, sustained and occasional loads, and piping flexibility.
  • Supporting purchasing requirements according to local site conditions and governmental regulations.
  • Interfacing with and participating on teams with manufacturing personnel, maintenance personnel, other engineering design disciplines, vendors, contractors, and suppliers as needed.
  • Able to identify technical problems and appropriately engages the Subject Matter Expert network.
  • The preferred candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills:
    • Leading by influence.
    • Able to work effectively across cultures and time zones.
    • Capacity to successfully function within a multicultural team is critical. 
    • Able to build teams and networks to foster team success and accomplish the project objectives.
    • Mentoring and coaching other discipline leads on work process and tools.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required.

  • A minimum of 5 years of manufacturing experience with at least 2 of those years working as a discipline lead is required.

  • Excellent communication (written and oral in English) and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be able to do field work in an operating chemical plant, take field measurements, and climb stairs and ladders.

  • Self-starter with high initiative:

    • Able to participate as a team player on dynamic multi-discipline project teams requiring strong negotiating and evaluation skills.

    • Experience in simultaneously managing conflicting priorities, resources, and timelines.

    • Demonstrates competencies of directing others, staffing, planning and controlling the discipline portion of project work.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.  No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A degree discipline in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • At least 8 years of manufacturing experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma Methodologies is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the below piping systems and tools is preferred:
    • Chemical / petrochemical process industries
    • Design criteria and standards
    • Applicable codes and standards, both national and international (ex. ASME B31.1 and B31.3)
    • Safety and loss prevention principles
    • P&ID symbology
    • Piping Stress Analysis
    • Pipe specifications
    • Piping Materials (pipe, valves, fitting)
    • Constructability issues, construction techniques, and construction drawings
    • 3D modeling (e.g., SP3D, PDMS, PDS)
