JOB SUMMARY

The S&C Electric Power System Solutions (PSS) Organization performs Engineering, Procurement and Construction Activities for Utilities and Large Power Users and Producers including Solar and Energy Storage projects. In addition, we have three Service organizations that repair, support, monitor, start-up and train customers on the installation, operation and repair of S&C Electric Company equipment.  Reporting to the Manager of Safety & Environmental, this position assists with company safety & environmental activities to assure compliance with legal requirements utilizing economical, effective, efficient & friendly concepts. This position works closely with leadership to provide technical consultation, support, and guidance to leadership and team members on safety & environmental matters.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinate all aspects of HSE Program including training for current and new team members.
  • Maintain and manage safety & training documentation and policies across the various regions.
  • Refine existing programs and procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency, or eliminate their need.
  • Maintain documents showing compliance with programs and procedures. (ISN, BROWZ & other websites as needed)
  • Support PSS to develop Site Safety Plans including audit requirements, procedures, and practices needed for compliance with customers' site safety requirements.
  • Perform Site Safety Observations for High Voltage Test Cages, Field Service, Smart Grid, and Major Projects Sites (including Substation work, Solar Plant construction and Utility related construction services).
  • Coordinate accident and incident Investigations, determine probable cause into near misses/accidents/injuries and make recommendations for corrective actions and changes in practice and policy.
  • Track Federal, State and Local safety & environmental regulations and evaluates their effects on company operations.
  • Interface with Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, Technology, Quality, Purchasing, Legal Affairs and others to meet assigned safety & environmental objectives.
  • Establish and coordinate facility observations, audits and inspections to assure all facility operations are in compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations and corrective actions are completed and documented.
  • Provide safety & environmental guidance and advice for existing operations, programs and procedures. These may include but are not limited to: Behavior Based Safety (BBS) programs, Location Emergency Response Plan (LERP); Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures Plan (SPCC); Hazard Communication and GHS, Safety Data Sheets, TSCA, fire prevention. LOTO, Confined Space, Ergonomics, PIV, Asbestos, industrial air and noise monitoring, sustainability and waste management compliance, waste minimization, pollution prevention, air emissions, wastewater discharge and monitoring, ERT, Safety Action Teams (SAT), DOT, OSHA requirements and proactive incident prevention and injury reduction.

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and/or Environmental, Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Business or equivalent experience.
  • Experience Developing & Leading a Safety program with Medium or High Voltage.
  • Complete understanding of Utility Safety Practices.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Experience developing and deploying safety training programs.
  • Demonstrated sustained high-level performance in safety & environmental functions with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle a variety of safety & environmental projects and assignments and to bring an effective approach to the solution of technical objectives.

Relevant Experience Required: 
6+ years of experience as a Safety & Environmental Coordinator (preferred), or equivalent experience in an engineering, utility or manufacturing environment.  A Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) a plus.  In-depth knowledge of Medium and High voltage electrical (utility/industrial/construction).

MAJOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This job may require periodic travel by car and/or airline to S&C locations and perform in-person observation, inspections and investigations in a wide variety of construction, utility, factory and office environments or attend off site seminars and training activities for continued safety and/or environmental development. 10% or less.
  • Activities such as standing, extensive walking, climbing stairs / ladders, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, handling and may be exposed to hot/cold temperatures will occasionally be required.
  • Frequent use of computers and office equipment is required.
  • Ability to support on call and work after hours as needed.
  • Standing: Some tasks are performed in a standing position.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of items up to 40 pounds.
  • Walking: Occasional walking of moderate distances (1 mile) within the S&C complex, customer locations, etc.
  • Carrying: Occasional carrying of luggage, presentation materials, etc. to customer locations.
  • Bending: Occasional bending or crouching to perform work.
  • Reaching: Continuous full range of motion to perform work.
  • Handling: Frequent use of a PC keyboard and mouse.
  • Environment: Work performed in a regular office environment within a manufacturing facility, but may occasionally visit customer site, i.e. substations and construction sites.
