An engineering company, focused on providing custom solutions to utility companies across the country is looking for a Technical Service Engineer to support our growing product line. We have provided custom equipment, products and services to utilities for over 30 years and have evolved into a full service solutions provider.  The following is a summary of objectives, activities, and responsibilities needed to be a successful candidate.

Position Objectives

This position is a combination of field work and inside production and testing.  The Technical Service Engineer will travel to the customer location, resolve customer issues, troubleshoot equipment, and sell or install equipment upgrades.  While at the office, work with the production and test group to work on returns, repairs, build standard products, and wire custom equipment.  Mechanical, electrical, controls, software, critical thinking, and sales skills are all core skills for the Field Service Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Work with all departments in the organization.  Be an integral part of project teams, attend meetings, and offer expertise when needed.  This position will be responsible for ensuring consistent and timely handling of warranty and non-warranty repair requests through proper procedures, documentation, and coordination.

  • Demonstrated ability to read technical drawings, parts lists, and BOMs to facilitate warranty and non-warranty repair requests.
  • Read and understand complex schematics.  Able to perform common electronic calculations and comfortable soldering, crimping, and assembling connectors.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills - communications skills must be effective and courteous, requiring high integrity when dealing with internal and external personnel/departments and potential customers.
  • Coordinate resources (material, components, etc.) for customer support requests.  Coordinate with customer, schedule, and travel to complete on-site customer service.
  • Develop customer relationships to discover potential new opportunities for future sales and upgrades.
  • Document all equipment issues and deliver solutions/improvements back to the Engineering group to improve our product, our process and prevent future trips for like issues.
  • Troubleshoot equipment down to the component level to determine cause and remedy of any malfunction.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical safety, NEC and Utility industry codes (OSHA, NFPA, NEC, LOTO, etc.).  Be capable and comfortable working with 1 phase and 3 phase systems.
  • Strong organizational skills.  Self-Motivated with ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Proficient with standard Microsoft Products including Access, Visio and Project.  AutoCAD software is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with PLC software in industrial equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tools and test equipment.  Operate oscilloscope, meters, test fixtures, small power tools and understand their use and function.
