Description
To provide operational and strategic leadership and oversight of US pension delivery, developing the Pension's strategy and business plan, driving its implementation through indirect team. 

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • As part of the Group Pensions leadership team, contribute to the development of the long-term priorities and business plan for the US, including the group pensions strategy, and setting a clear direction for meeting the company's pension objectives.
  • As a leader in the National Grid business, manage and lead a high-performing function, ensuring a positive climate, effective performance management, development and retention of employees, and ensuring the function has the necessary resources and systems in place to perform to a high level.
  • Proactively identify the most effective operating structure for US pensions delivery, ensuring succession plans are in place (where required and appropriate), that structured development plans are in place, and that functional silos bridged to ensure a high-performing, collaborative multi-disciplinary team.
  • Develop the strategy and policy on US pensions - including but not limited to funding, risk management, governance and benefits (working with Director of Retirement Strategy as appropriate on benefits). Influencing key stakeholders as required to gain agreement.
  • Act as a conduit and influence between the US Benefits and Investment Fiduciary Committees.
  • On behalf of the company, strategically influence government and policy making in the common interest of strengthening the position of National Grid's interest.
  • Ensure that US Pensions projects have the appropriate level of internal resource appropriate to deliver their intended benefits.
  • Work with HR and Investment Management to determine the funding and investment strategy and delivery approach for OPEBs.
  • Leverage learnings and best practice from the Group Pensions function, working in particular with the Head of Pensions Strategy, to identify and evaluate the appropriateness of possible actions (i.e., determining cash funding strategy, liability reduction, etc.,)
Requirements

Knowledge & Experience Required:

  • Comprehensive experience of pension plan management, including experience of managing a major plan or plans approaching the size and complexity of the NG plans.
  • Experience of effective governance frameworks - to include effective and demonstrable oversight mechanisms and governance processes.
  • Ability to develop trusted adviser relationships with all executive of National Grid US, Fiduciary committees looking after plans, and regulatory bodies, and to build partnerships with external advisers to achieve a shared understanding of needs and goals. And ability to build strong, long term relationships and bring stakeholders together to create solutions to complex issues.

Qualifications:

  • Professional certification in a relevant area, for example actuarial, law or accountancy or equivalent experience.
