Alstom has been contributing for several years to the great success of ACELA High Speed Trains service, providing technical support to Amtrak Engineering and Operations teams, as well as full spares logistics. As a Technical Support Engineer, you will work in the Alstom team troubleshooting, testing, and investigating technical issues, with the aim of improving the reliability of the trains, especially for the components regularly supplied by Alstom. You will also support Amtrak teams in optimizing the preventative and corrective maintenance.
- Job Responsibilities
- General: Within the Acela Technical group, the Technical Support Engineer will work with multiple technical groups on the Acela Trainset Maintenance program. Groups include Alstom's workcenter and test facility, Amtrak Engineering and maintenance groups, as well as various suppliers/Original Equipment Manufacturers :
- Investigate technical issues and improve reliability of electrical and electronic computer systems supplied by Alstom :
- identify failure modes, possible root causes, and validate them
- define containment if necessary
- propose possible solutions
- support associated business case
- support deployment of the selected solutions
- monitor reliability.
- Be the link between technical operations in Trainsets depots and activities in Alstom repair workcenters and suppliers :
- Improve testing coverage, in order to secure operational reliability, making sure that the main failure modes can be detected either on the trains, or in the repair shops. Advise our customer Amtrak about possible improvement solutions, and deploy them. This would include modifying and building test equipment and procedures, in the field (trains maintenance workshops) and in the back shop (repair center).
- The Technical Support Engineer is expected to efficiently collect the back-shop knowledge (troubleshooting, test processes, repair processes, and supply chain) to supplement field work as a function of the program.
- Address obsolescence cases for electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical components, supporting the entire process through all stages:
- detect obsolescence
- define containment if necessary
- propose possible solutions
- support associated business case
- prepare technical proposal, and support commercial offer
- support deployment of the selected solutions
- monitor reliability.
- Write, validate and explain necessary technical documentation (test & troubleshooting procedures, check lists, etc.)
- Autonomously execute & track tasks assigned by the Project Engineering Manager, producing periodical written reporting.

- The position is based in Washington, DC.
- Travel : - 50 % of travel required (domestic ) - Predominantly to Newcastle, DE. Occasional trips to supplier locations.
- Qualifications
- Degree : Two to four year degree in electronic or electrical discipline and/or equivalent military background in electronic, electrical, or electro-mechanical test, diagnostic, maintenance, validation, development.
- Experience : Five-six years of experience with electronic and electro-mechanical equipment, ideally in railways environment.
- Other skills :
- Propensity to self -learn/research and continuously improve knowledge
- Ability to comprehend data sheets and technical attributes of material, execute common test methods, develop tests for specific investigations
- Technical, formal, and conversational writing
- MS office suite, capability of data analysis, university-level mathematical competency
