This is a 12 or 16 month term position. An opportunity currently exists for an internship / co-op student in the Lifecycle Maintenance Engineering team within the Asset Management department at AltaLink's Calgary office. Reporting, to the Manager, Lifecycle Maintenance Engineering, the successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting Engineering data automation, modeling, database design activities, risk analytics and reporting on AltaLink's transmission facilities in Alberta, which range from 69kV to 500kV. The successful candidate will be providing support to the Protection and Control and SCADA engineering disciplines.

The successful candidate will perform the following activities under the guidance of technical staff:

  • Support Protection and Control Engineer and SCADA Engineer to maintain/manage relay and SCADA equipment databases
  • Assist in automating the extraction and correlation of data from multiple data sources including SAP, SQL, Excel, PI Historian and other custom software interfaces
  • Assist in the definition and optimization of database constructs for the efficient storage, calculation and management of asset health and asset risk data
  • Support Protection and Control and SCADA Engineers with electrical substation automation equipment failures/saves analysis based on multiple data sources;
  • Follow Condition Monitoring & Assessment process, analyze asset health index and assess maintenance measures for protective relays;
  • Support SCADA Engineer in the development of risk assessment criteria and risk assessment tools
  • Creation and updating of process documentation and work instructions related to asset management 
Requirements

Qualifications

  • A Computer Engineering student who is enrolled in a Co-op/Internship program at a recognized University and has completed two or more years of studies;
  • Interest in substation automation and power system performance analysis;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PPT);
  • Working knowledge of SQL database queries would be an asset;
  • Familiarity with relay testing software (RTS and / or Protection Suite) would be an asset;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a team environment and develop strong internal and external relationships;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of tasks simultaneously;
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail as well as strong analytical and problem solving skills.
