The Product Quality Team at Scotford is seeking to fill a Laboratory Technologist position.  The successful candidate will be part of a high performing Laboratory team that operate, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment. The successful individual is expected to lead by example in the areas of Safety, Product Quality, and Production.

A Day in the life of a Shell Canada Laboratory Technologist:

Under the direction of the Lab Team Lead:

  • Executes a full range of lab analysis for product certification and process sample quality analysis
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment in a support lab
  • Maintain instrument quality control to ensure accuracy of results
  • Communicate daily with the control room operators and ensure that strong and effective communications are maintained between operations and the lab
  • Ensure that inventory and audits are performed such as indicated in the Lab Safety and Quality Manuals 

Special Challenges 

  • Work schedule may change frequently to support Production Units business needs
  • Must have a strong sense of ownership because off-hours response is required occasionally to handle process and product quality issues
  • Must be capable of prioritizing own work to help meet department and team objectives
  • Working in a group of diverse individuals contributing to a high performing team
  • Define, in coordination with team leader, new analysis capabilities
  • Ability to work independently and in a flexible team environment
  • Advocate of continuously improving work-processes
  • Organized and able to work within tight deadlines
Requirements

Experience and Qualifications 

  • Technical Diploma or Bachelor Degree (Chemistry or related field), combined with related industrial lab experience
  • Hands-on laboratory experience (full-time) with a diverse range of analytical instruments and techniques, including sample preparation and data analysis
  • Knowledge of sampling techniques and product release requirements
  • Demonstrated mechanical ability is required, as well as a strong foundation in SQC principles, data analysis, and experience with Sample Manager
  • Demonstrated application of chemistry and chemical fundamentals
  • Working knowledge of ISO 17025
  • Must be a self starter and capable of prioritizing and managing workloads without direct supervision
  • Have safety as a first priority and demonstrate safety leadership in the lab
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
