The Health, Safety and Environment Consultant is responsible for the completion of assigned safety and environmental audit engagements and certifications. This involves leading, coordinating and conducting safety and environmental audits of EPCOR operations, developing safety and environmental audit protocols, and facilitating EPCOR business unit certification to external safety and environmental standards.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Internal Audit, the Consultant, Health, Safety & Environment is accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Providing input to the Senior Manager, Internal Audit business plans and directions.
  • Ensuring on-going, effective positioning and appropriate relationships between the Internal Audit group and the rest of EPCOR.
  • Developing audit protocols / programs to be used internally and by consultants to perform health, safety and environmental audits of EPCOR's Canadian and U.S. operations. 
  • Working with the Internal Audit team in performing integrated audits of EPCOR operations, specifically leading, coordinating and / or conducting the audit of compliance with Canadian and U.S. health, safety and environmental regulations and conformance with EPCOR's HSE Management System.
  • Preparing comprehensive health, safety and environmental audit reports to senior leadership outlining audit findings, risk rankings and recommendations.
  • Managing the delivery of audit engagements that meet or exceed Internal Audit performance standards.
  • Identifying and analyzing issues impacting operational performance and providing opportunities for improvement. 
  • Developing and delivering training to internal auditors and providing mentorship to other internal HSE auditors.
Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline with a professional health, safety or environmental designation (CRSP, CHSC, EP, etc.).
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a health, safety and environmental professional; experience implementing management systems would be an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian health, safety and environmental regulations and International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 standard and Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001 standard.
  • Certified to be an ISO 14001 and / or OHSAS 18001 lead auditor.
  • Some knowledge of U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations would be an asset but not essential.
  • Experience conducting HSE internal audits; experience as third party auditor for a Registrar would be an asset.
  • Experience in the utilities sector (electricity, water, wastewater, natural gas, etc.) would be an asset. 
  • Able to travel within Canada and to the U.S. Potential travel of 25%.
  • Solid understanding of risk and control principles and their impact on the business.
  • Strong written communication and presentation skills. 
  •  Ability to use stairs, ladders and climb over rough terrain.

As the successful candidate, you are able to exercise influence when working in a cross functional team, and demonstrate effective interpersonal and leadership skills. You also demonstrate a strong work ethic, critical thinking skills and time management, as well as diplomacy and ability to calmly handle confrontation.

Hours of work: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

  • To meet the physical demands required of some positions, candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.
