Description

The Senior Analyst, Accounting provides financial accounting and reporting services and analytical review of financial results for SaskEnergy Incorporated and its subsidiary companies.  Additionally, the Senior Analyst reviews and analyzes the impact of accounting policy changes and coordinates the implementation and application of accounting policy.

Core Responsibilities

Accounting

  • Conduct the accounting, preparation and analysis of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial, rate-setting and regulatory reporting for SaskEnergy and its subsidiaries.
  • Develop and implement effective accounting processes and procedures.
  • Prepare complex calculations and analysis supporting accounting valuations, processes and journal entries.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of business processes, policies and practices as it relates to accounting policy changes specific to, but not exclusively, International Financial Reporting Standards.
  • Develop and maintain Corporate Financial Management system reports and processes to meet user information needs.
  • Monitor accounting developments, business trends and Corporate activities for potential accounting impacts and take corrective action as necessary.
  • Participate in the testing, implementation and maintenance of software programs related to financial accounting and reporting.
  • Administer the Corporate Financial Management system ensuring account codes, cost centres, descriptions, values and other settings comply with approved accounting policies and are appropriate to meet Corporate financial reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and confirm that business transactions are appropriately accounted for.
  • Prepare reconciliations of the Corporate Financial Management system in a timely manner to ensure Corporate financial records are accurate.
  • Perform critical functions related to complex accounting processes such as financial instruments, customer contributions, impairment testing and asset retirement obligations.
  • Develop and maintain major components of the business and accounting models used to prepare budgets and forecasts using and interpreting information from other internal departments.

Review and Analysis

  • Conduct analysis of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial, rate-setting and regulatory reporting including year-end working paper preparation.
  • Prepare components of transportation, delivery and commodity rate applications.
  • Respond to internal questions in regards to financial accounting/reporting, capital assets, job cost tracking, gas in storage inventory, cost of gas and other related issues.
  • Complete projects as assigned.
  • Research tax and accounting questions, including communication with government departments such as Canada Revenue Agency and the Ministry of Finance, and the external auditors.
  • Analyze systems and processes and implement changes to improve the integrity, reliability and usefulness of information from the Corporate Financial Management system.
  • Participate in the preparation of various Corporate expense budgets for the Business Plan.
  • Participate and represent finance & accounting departments on Corporate committees.
  • Provide insight and analysis on the nature of costs and their relationship to business activities.

Financial Reporting

  • Complete the monthly, quarterly and annual financial, rate-setting and regulatory reporting including year-end financial statements and notes.
  • Prepare regulatory reporting and other communication as required by government departments and regulators.
  • Participate in the development of business processes, policies and practices as it relates to accounting policy changes required specifically due to, but not exclusively as a result of, International Financial Reporting Standards.
  • Participate in the development and documentation of internal controls over financial reporting and the procedures related to financial reporting.

Other

  • Participate in the testing, implementation and maintenance of the Corporate Financial Management system.
  • Maintain and promote effective communication and relationships with internal departments for management reporting and external parties (external auditors, government departments, regulators, natural gas suppliers) for mandatory reporting and/or queries/confirmations related to financial statements and other reporting requirements.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on accounting inquiries.
Requirements

Education:

  • Degree in Business Administration or Commerce.
  • A professional accounting designation.

Experience:

  • Four (4) years of accounting and financial experience.

Alternative Education/Experience:

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
