Electricity Operations is responsible for the electrical transmission and distribution systems in the City of Edmonton, with a focus on safety, reliability, and innovative and practical solutions. Our employees look after electrical infrastructure as well as the underground and aerial distribution networks.

Brief Description

Electricity Operations, Transmission group is recruiting for one (1) permanent, full-time Power Lineman III - Transmission (Powerline Technician) to join their team.

Detailed Description

In the Power Lineman III - Transmission (Powerline Technician) position you would be working on energized aerial systems (120- 500,000 volts) using rubber glove and other live line techniques. The accountabilities of this role include, but are not limited to: 

  • Constructing, repairing and maintaining new and existing D&T aerial systems up to 500kV. 
  • Mentoring and Training apprentices. 
  • Supervising non-trades personnel.
  • Responding to emergency conditions and environmental hazards.
  • Performing administrative duties using written and basic computer skills as required.
  • Trouble shooting.
  • Inspecting work completed by contractors.
  • Switching on energized electrical apparatus and system automation components.
  • Promoting safe and organized work sites.
  • Identifying controls for hazards and safe work planning.
Salary & Benefits

The successful candidate will have the following requirements: 

  • Grade 12 or G.E.D.
  • Journeyman Powerline Technician certificate or Power Lineman certificate or equivalent Red Seal.
  • 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Proven ability to read technical drawings and schematics (hard copy and electronic).
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and will be required to obtain a working knowledge of related provincial safety legislation, AEUC, OH&S and city bylaws.
  • Valid Class 1 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License, or the ability to obtain it within three months of hire date with 6 or fewer demerits.
  • Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR driver's permit.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of products including, Excel and Word.
  • To meet the demands of the position, good physical health is required. Clearance on pre-placement medical plus drug and alcohol testing will be required.
  • You require skills and abilities along with a thorough working knowledge of:
    • Protective grounding
    • Switching
    • Climbing of poles with belt and spurs
    • Climbing of various transmission structures
    • Aerial bucket/ hydraulic equipment
    • Tension stringing devices
    • Electrical safe work practices
  • Clearance on a background security check is required.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. A copy of a valid work permit may be required. 

Additionally, these would be valuable assets for successful candidates to possess: 

  • Working knowledge of EPCOR Safety Manual & EPCOR procedures and work practices current to within 6 months.
  • Trained and experienced to operate a manlift.
  • Experience working on energized lines using the live line hotstick method.

Additional Details

  • Jurisdiction: IBEW1007
  • Class: PT3
  • Wage: $50.62 - $54.60
  • Hours of work: 8 hours per day between the hours of 0700h - 1800h, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday.

However, in accordance with Article 6.01.01.02 of the Agreement, the work week may be any 5 consecutive days.
