Role Summary/Purpose:

As a member of the Energy Consulting team, the successful candidate will be an active contributor to GE Energy business initiatives related to power systems equipment and services

Essential Responsibilities:

  • As the Engineer 
    - Electrical Engineering, you will:
  • Communicate effectively with clients to support their testing or compliance needs, and resolving issues promptly
  • Support GE Energy Management project(s) with power systems engineering expertise; including design and equipment specification studies, commissioning support, and troubleshooting and failure mode analyses
  • Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, customer service and innovation are prized
  • Be responsible for design of protection schemes for industrial and utility substation applications including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, and relay settings
  • Provide performance based and economic evaluations, selection, application, settings, operational analysis, and maintenance practices of protection schemes and devices
  • Evaluate the interoperability, control features, and communication/protocol aspects of protective relays
  • Perform power system load flow studies, fault studies, relay setting coordination, and transient studies
  • Contribute to multiple project teams to perform dynamic modeling and simulation of electric power systems
  • Effectively communicate results to both internal and external customers by preparing written detailed and summary reports and making presentations describing analyses performed, solutions developed, and customer value propositions
  • Support domestic and international projects across regions depending on overall market needs, and communicate customer needs and values back to GE
  • Organize project teams and guide the work of individual contributors to the team effort
  • Enhance industry knowledge and present technical content in regional forums and professional society conferences; serve as a thought leader in industry activities
Requirements

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical. electric power, or related engineering. (Bachelor's in physical sciences or applied mathematics acceptable when combined with relevant electric power industry experience.)
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in electrical or electric power engineering, power system protection applications, conventional and renewable power plant design and operation, transmission and distribution systems design and operation, or other relevant engineering experience in electric power utilities, HV power equipment manufacturing, HV and high-power equipment testing, or electric power projects design and construction
  • ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed (up to 20%)
  • Ability and willingness to work from location in Schenectady, NY EC offices

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master's or PhD degree in electrical or electric power engineering, or related field of study
  • Experience performing analysis related to Power system protection and/or other electrical studies using tools like: ASPEN, ETAP, EasyPower, DigSILENT and CAPE
  • Multivendor experience on power system studies integration and/or applications involving different vendors manufacture equipment's (GE, ALSTOM, SEL, Siemens, Beckwith, ABB, Basler, AREVA, etc.)
  • Experience in planning and execution of complex technical projects relevant to electric power systems
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g. ability to effectively communicate with all levels of GE and customer/plant staff)
  • Understanding of grid systems interactions with power plant equipment and controls
  • Demonstrated application of complex mathematics and engineering to real-world (not merely academic) electric power problems
  • Strong project management skills
  • Advanced experience with dynamic and time-domain simulation tools (e.g. FORTRAN programming of user-written "black box" models in PSCAD, or use of Matlab scripting to automate multiple iterative approaches to simulation)
  • Experience with dynamic and time-domain simulation tools (ATP/EMTP, PSCAD/EMTDC, PSLF, PSS/E, Python and C++ and/or MATLAB desired)
