Eaton Corporation in Sumter, SC has an opening for a Electrical Switchboard (SWBD) Inspector on 2nd Shift.

This position is on 2nd Shift (Monday-Friday, 1:00 PM - 9:30 PM), with occasional overtime and weekend work per business needs. Initial training will occur from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. 

Primary Responsibilities:

To verify SWBDs are engineered and assembled to meet customer's needs by referencing drawings, design literature, electrical / utility codes, and Sumter specific quality management documents (procedures, work instructions, standard work, etc.).

Visually and mechanically inspect SWBDs, conduct limited electrical tests (Hi-Pot), and perform limited component functional tests to verify acceptability of assembled SWBD products; essential job requirement is to protect the customer (field installation personnel as well as end users) from quality problems.

Essential Functions:

  • To inspect equipment, ensuring it meets customer specification as well as safety and quality requirements.
  • Inspect and Hi-Pot SWBD product produced on all lines, according to inspection work instructions and in accordance with applicable governmental requirements, to confirm proper function of SWBDs and electrical components and identify any product non-conformances.  Document inspections made on applicable checklist.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of basic electricity, current flow, component functionality, schematics/wiring diagrams and assembly processes on all lines. (Hi-Pot, Shunt Trip ) 
  • Use Hi-Pot, continuity test, and component-specific testing devices to perform electrical testing.  Verify switches and circuit breakers function properly. Verify torqued connections using torque wrench, per inspection instructions. Conduct electrical and mechanical tests per safety and training requirements and procedures. (Hi-Pot) 
  • Examine and verify mating structures (all structures in a line-up) as necessary to ensure that job is complete and field installation is problem-free (i.e. splice plate dimensions, kirk key coordination, etc).
  • Verify that any revisions released to the production floor regarding functionality and customer specifications are incorporated into the product, all documentation reflects the current revision, and previous revisions of documents are not used / discarded.  (Process and Update paperwork accurately - POM, test reports, etc.)
  • Ensure that component literature and necessary product documentation are included with the job.  
  • Thoroughly document non-conformances, which are critical quality records, to aid problem solving and continuous improvement efforts.  Communicate production non-conformances to appropriate production personnel in a timely manner and verify required rework.  Communicate design errors to appropriate front end personnel for correction, obtain revisions, and verify required rework.
  • Ensure that suspect product is identified as such at all times to prevent unintended use.
  • Serve as informal trainer for production associates, communicate well with other associates, and build positive relationships that support job objectives and teamwork. Providing assistance particularly for complex tasks and for product requirements that may not be precisely defined (i.e. barrier placement).
  • Troubleshoot, update, develop test setups and new procedures when current procedures are inaccurate.
  • Monitor work flow on all production lines and prioritize inspection tasks between all lines to minimize flow disruption.
  • Coordinate with other inspector and testers to transfer incomplete jobs from one shift to the other such that no inspections or  tests are missed and full accountability is maintained.
  • Support problem solving and continuous improvement efforts by bringing attention to quality problems, participating on improvement teams, and working with production personnel to resolve minor problems.
  • Work in a safe manner, observing all safety rules and protocol.  Report unsafe situations to appropriate supervisors / managers.  Stop all work immediately if unsafe conditions warrant.
  • To constantly evolve in product and process knowledge.
  • To follow procedures with efficiency and attention to details, with little supervision.
  • Maintain orderly and clean work area.
  • Record any measurable statistics which the position impacts such as production expenses, maintenance expenses, sales volumes, payroll costs, capital expenditures, research budgets, cost of purchases, value of inventories controlled, employees supervised (direct and indirect).

  • The SWBD product is a customized offering requiring that each job be thoroughly examined to understand the unique requirements.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3-years of experience in Switchboard Assembly or equivalent
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship
  • Must reside within 50 miles of Sumter SC - no relocation provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two-Year Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics  (Associate's Degree in Mechatronics)

Position Criteria:

  • Knowledge of basic electricity, current flow, and component functionality.
  • Knowledge of all assembled SWBD product designs (i.e. PRL-C, PRL-I, IFS, FDS, MF, etc.)
  • Experience in applicable UL codes, NEC codes, regional utility codes, customer-specific requirements.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret manufacturing documents, including front view, MIs, Blow-Thrus, Wiring Diagrams, component literature, engineering drawings, and testing procedures.
