Eaton has an opening for an Engineering Specialist - Power Grid Systems Controls in the Corporate Research & Technology team. This position can be located in Eden Prairie, MN or Southfield, MI.

Corporate Research & Technology focuses on the front end of innovation by: conducting research to advance the state of the art, emphasizing cross-business impact technologies, and innovating to provide Eaton's customers' with safe, efficient, and reliable power management solutions.

The Advanced Controls team has the principal goal of identifying, developing, and justifying commercialization of significant growth opportunities for diverse Eaton businesses in the area of advanced control technologies in power grid systems, smart grid, grid modernization, power electronics and edge intelligent apparatus.

The Senior Engineering Specialist is expected to lead technology strategy and execution for broad applications. This includes acquiring resources, funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. They will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost and technical targets for all research and development efforts under his/her control.

The Senior Engineering Specialist should serve as a subject matter expert within the area of Power Grid System Controls for Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community and academia, active participation in industry or technical groups and events, publishing papers, etc. Finally as a subject matter expert internally the Senior Engineering Specialist will be expected to mentor junior staff and consult with internal business & engineering customers

Essential functions include:

  • Leads complex global technology realization programs/projects involving multiple components utilizing our internal project execution processes, including Gate Reviews, Design Reviews, and Technical Reviews.
  • Understand program/project risks and is able to influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere decisions.
  • Serve as (or support) Program Managers in the development of detailed project plans and value proposition. Lead globally diverse cross-functional project teams effectively and manage selected projects under the guidelines of our internal stage-gate process.
  • Leads the development of global strategies for powertrain control technology roadmaps that are linked to and supportive of the overall CRT and business strategies.
  • Leads or co-leads ideation events (Innovation Summits, Design Bursts, etc.)
  • Serves as Principal Investigator in government proposal preparation and/or project execution of large projects
  • Initiates and develops solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders within Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding.
  • Strategically identify leading external partnerships, outside technologies and best practices to bring to Eaton.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert externally and internally. This includes leadership/active participation in external industry and technical groups, mentoring junior level staff and consulting internal business and engineering partners.
  • Sets IP strategy with business unit stakeholders and actively contributes to IP generation.
Requirements

Basic Qualification:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Control System Engineering from an accredited institution required.
  • Minimum of 5 Years of experience in control technology development for power grid system applications.

Position Criteria:

  • Management System (DMS), SCADA, Volt/VAR Controls, FLISR, and Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS).
  • Expertise in control technology development such as adaptive controls, model-predictive power management and optimization.
  • Knowledge of IEEE/IEC/ANSI/CSA/UL Standards for various power system components and applications and ISO, UL safety regulations and principles.
  • Expert in model-based control system development using power system simulation tools such as Matlab/Simulink
  • Should be recognized externally as a subject matter expert in power system controls. This may be evident through invitations to present a technical presentation or publish in a technical journal as SME to an audience of technical/industry peers
  • Able to drive strong business case with key stakeholders and create new commercial applications for Eaton
  • SimPowerSystems, PSCAD, PLECS, CYME and real-time control systems in both hardware in the loop simulation and prototype systems.
  • Ability to apply Design for Six Sigma methodology Experience in engaging with business stakeholders and OEM customers, and developing strong partnerships in key research areas.
  • Proven track record of IP generation and publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD preferred in control system engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or a related field.
  • Expert in C++, HDL, Python and/or other control development software/firmware
  • DFSS Green Belt.
  • Experience in leading government funded projects and proposals.
  • Experience in power grid systems control technology solution development, performing dynamic systems modeling and analysis, performing power systems research and development from concept to implementation, as well as understanding economics value proposition.
  • Experience in working on utility-scale power system design and leading large projects with multiple stakeholders and cross-functional teams. Strong program management skill is required.
  • Strong power system engineering skills and have broad power grid system domain knowledge in distribution grid system controls, fault and protection, power distribution modules and power conversion applications including utility Distribution
  • Experience in writing government proposals; demonstrated success as being selected for funding and/or successful execution of government sponsored projects.
