This primary purpose of this position is to perform research into emerging technologies for the electric system and provide technical and engineering support for the implementation of selected enhanced grid technologies.  The incumbent is expected to understand the impacts of existing and emerging technology and to provide consultation on the utilization of technology as well as write reports and make presentations to peers and management.

In addition, this position will provide support for various other activities such as system planning, reliability, standards & materials, asset management and general engineering support as needed.  This position will work under general supervision in the Electric Energy Delivery area of Vectren.

Main Accountabilities:

General:

Employee shall manage multiple assignments and priorities concurrently under general supervision. Identify and resolve deficiencies in processes and procedures. Employee must track and achieve annual performance objectives and goals established with manager. Employee must work together with other areas of the company, such as Operations, Training, Risk Management and others, including external customers, to gather data necessary to perform other duties. This position will require the occasional need to work flexible hours to meet critical deadlines.

Emerging Technologies:

Employee shall coordinate and advise electric engineering and customer energy solutions on future and existing emerging electric energy technology applications and effects to Vectren's electric grid.  Employee shall determine impacts of emerging electric energy technologies to current and future Vectren business operations. Employee shall monitor, gather, analyze, and disseminate emerging energy technology intelligence to audiences at multiple levels of the organization.  This will include reports and discussions with peers and various levels of management.  The position is expected to seek out information applicable to Vectren's business direction and grid operations and participate in planning and development initiatives regarding technology issues.

This position provides support to existing asset management activities and strategies as needed.  Employee will have some primary objectives related to asset management activities and will also function as bench support for single threaded roles.

Process Support:

Employee will develop alternatives and recommendations for new load, energy storage, and generation on the distribution system.  This will involve the processing and evaluation of net meter and other interconnection applications according to Indiana Administrative Code and Vectren requirements.    Employee shall review electric system configurations and applications to ensure reliable service and improve system performance. Employee shall use the Geographic Information System (GIS), power flow software, and/or other software applications to develop plans, alternatives, recommendations, and perform fault study calculations necessary to provide reliable electric supply to various types and sizes of customers and to improve overall system performance.

Employee shall develop, review, analyze, and optimize electric asset strategies and procedures in an effort to reduce total life cycle cost of asset ownership. Employee is responsible for meeting project schedules and budgets and providing status reports and updates on assigned projects.

Employee shall lead and coordinate the development and maintenance of electric standards to meet regulatory codes and work with other areas of the company to identify and obtain approved materials. Employee shall participate in and lead failure analysis of designs and materials. Employee shall provide support as needed to the Electric Engineering group and to Electric Operations in the development and evaluation of standard equipment and procedures.

Emergency Response:

Employee must perform duties associated with emergency response after severe storms or other events that may a detrimental impact on Vectren's electric system.  Such duties may require personnel to work various duties at alternate locations and may involve extended hours depending on company needs and situational requirements.

Specific position may be one or a combination of the following:

Emerging Technologies, Electric Planning, System Reliability, Standards & Materials, and Asset Management.

Functional/Technical Competency Requirements

Required:

Familiarity with basic electric power generation, transmission, and distribution with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and procedures.  Proficient in using computer applications such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), AutoCAD, electrical analysis software (for producing fault calculations and power flows), and other engineering and analytical applications.  Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and specifications for materials and services including effectively responding to questions and requests from managers, customer, and government agencies.  Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Basic understanding of cost-benefit analysis for conducting and analyzing economic and system performance studies.  This position applies standard practices and techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks in specific situations.  Strong orientation toward customer service required.

Ability to manage numerous projects and deadlines simultaneously with research and analytical skills.  Must be able to process large amounts of information and determine relevance. Work cross functionally across business units and departments to accomplish projects and tasks.  Experience with MS visual basic for applications a plus.  Strong desire to learn is essential.

Requirements

Essential:

Bachelor's degree, engineering or engineering technology (ABET accredited program).

Preferred:

Electrical discipline.  

Work Experience:

Essential:

2 - 4 years utility or relevant industry experience with a basic knowledge of engineering and operational practices applicable to electric utilities.

Preferred:

Engineering design experience in a utility-type environment and direct experience in the design of various electric facilities.

Knowledge of wiring diagrams for both AC and DC power systems, basic ladder logic, protective devices for over-current, ground fault, lighting protection and other systems common within electric power generation and delivery systems.
