Description
Provides expertise in the protection and control (relays) field. Acts as a resource to generalist personnel to investigate and resolve protection and control problems situations or complex issues. Researches, analyzes, develops and implements new relay protection and control programs, systems and/or processes in response to changing internal and external conditions. Develops and maintains relay operational and procedural documentation.

Associate level responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Provide technical support to operation and control functions within the business.
  • Under direction, develop and modify policies and practices to improve the effective operation of PacifiCorp’s substations and transmission and distribution system.
  • Recommend solutions to improve system performance.
  • Analyze schemes and prints and prepare field notebooks and outlines for installation of relays, and maintain file of field tests.
  • Assist with improvement of policies, procedures and other documentation that govern all aspects of electrical operations and ensure they are fully integrated with company safety procedures, legislative requirements and meet all NERC reliability standard requirements. 
  • Work with substation design engineers, protection and control engineers and operations staff to resolve system and design issues.
  • Provide training as needed for various departments including dispatch, relay technicians, relay protection and control technician trainees, communication technicians, communication technician trainees, substation journeyman, substation journeyman apprentices and switchman.

In addition to the above, the mid-level responsibilities include the following:  

  • Provide technical support to moderately complex substation, distribution and transmission operation, protection and control functions within the business.
  • Develop and modify policies and practices to improve the effectiveness of PacifiCorp’s transmission and distribution system.
  • Improve policies, procedures and other documentation that govern all aspects of electrical operations and ensure they are fully integrated with company safety procedures, legislative requirements and meet all NERC reliability standard requirements.  

In addition to the above, the Sr. Level responsibilities include the following: 

  • Provide technical support to critical and highly complex substation, distribution and transmission operation, protection and control functions within the business.
  • Lead development and implementation processes and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Evaluate protection and control policies, procedures and other documentation and ensure all aspects of electrical operations are in accordance with company safety procedures, legislative requirements and meet all NERC reliability standard requirements.
  • Work with protection and control relay technicians, communication technicians, and substation journeymen.
  • Analyze protection and control schemes and prints and prepare field notebooks and outlines for installation of substation equipment.
Requirements

Associate level requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Knowledge of the power system.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult and resolve internal and external customer issues which maybe critical, sensitive, or urgent in nature.
  • Ability to work with all levels of an organization including people with different styles and backgrounds; ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to effectively translate technical jargon into layman’s terms.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Respond after hours to support field crews as required

In addition to the above, the requirements for the mid-level  include the following:

  • A minimum of three years experience related experience.
  • Assessment skills including problem diagnosis and identification of proper methods and techniques to resolve and prevent future problems.
  • Knowledge of current technologies, tools, systems, and vendors.
  • Understanding of applicable company policies, practices and procedures.

In addition to the above, the requirements for the senior level include the following:

  • A minimum of five years’ related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of current technologies, tools, systems, and vendors.
  • Travel required (10-15%).

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the above requirements and have the following:

  • Experience supervising technical personnel.
  • Project management skills.
  • Familiarity with Aspen One Liner, Doble Protest and Protection Suite, and the use of digital fault recorders and Schweitzer relay records for operations analysis.  Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without an accommodation.

Salary & Benefits

$60,000.00 - $101,600.00/ a year
