Description
The Sales Engineer is responsible for engaging in the market to secure new customers and continue relationships with the existing customer base. Provide engineering expertise and knowledge for District Energy generation, distribution and resolution of problems internal to Cleveland Thermal and also in our external customers' energy systems.  In conjunction with Operations, and supporting the President, this role will be responsible for developing, managing and maintaining the district energy business. In addition to the engineering related activities the role will provide project management, business analysis and regulatory support for the operation of power generation plants and the facilities necessary to distribute steam and chilled water. A sample of the activities includes close liaison with Operations to deliver plant engineering for capital projects, optimization projects, asset management, development of master plans to support long term planning, develop and maintain engineering standards, equipment selection, design, construction and commissioning. Support the selection of engineering consultants and be responsible for the overseeing their work. As a key contributor to the team, this role will be responsible to ensure customer satisfaction, health and safety, and operational objectives are met while achieving the overall project related financial objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular contact with customers and prospective customers through site visits, meetings, phone calls and other means of communication.
  • Seek to understand customers' needs to maintain existing customers and to find opportunities to expand the client base.
  • Responsible to identify all technical requirements including health and safety, regulatory, code and engineering and ensures these are met for each customer connection.
  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing & Sales to assist in negotiations with customers.
  • Manage outside consulting engineering services as necessary to provide technical solutions for the client's needs and requirements.
  • Obtain customers' project plans, specifications and requirements to proactively be able to provide solutions.
  • Ensure that proper measurement and monitoring tools are in place and understood by all staff. Monitor the validity of these tools and redefine if needed.
  • Develop, understand, and maintain all engineering data to ensure overall success. Develop and present business cases to support projects utilizing the information from various sources including the input from Operations, Regulatory and Finance.
  • Evaluate the operation of the steam, chilled water, condensation systems and electrical production and distribution, as applicable, to provide a high level of efficiency, both in our generation and distribution systems and in customers systems. Seek methods to increase operational efficiencies. Educate and instruct operation staff on the strategies Cleveland Thermal wants to implement, to enhance efficiency.
  • Support the implementation of Cleveland Thermal's asset management framework including the support of all processes including asset registry, condition assessment, business risk evaluation, levels of services, development of the operational and capital plans, and the asset management plan. Responsible for ensuring long-term master planning, capital planning including the development of the justification and scope, managing these from planning and modeling (steam models, hydraulic network models, gas and wastewater planning), through final commissioning.
  • Utilizing all the data collection within Cleveland Thermal's arena, develop hourly resolution interactive models of interconnecting utilities. Use these models to demonstrate and evaluate potential strategic and operational options showing improved efficiency, economy and capacity requirements. Derive operation commodity budgets from the models to predict incremental expansion of the utilities capacity or volume.
Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Certification preferred 
  • Experience:  5 to 7 years of experience preferably in campus or district utility settings or large industrial complexes.  Previous experience with the following considered an asset: chilled water production using centrifugal chillers, Steam and electricity production utilizing both gas turbines and HRSG technology along with the production of superheated steam from package boilers and electricity from both OST and condense turbines

    Specific Skills:  

  • Knowledge of steam and chilled water piping principles, pumps, control valves, chiller and boiler operation
  • Organization skills
  • Ability to produce drafting plans
  • Technical writing skills
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc: 

  • Project Management Experience
  • Understanding of Advanced steam and chilled water generating systems 
  • Accounting principles
  • 5 or more years' experience in construction trades or industrial maintenance including some experience monitoring contract labor and projects to ensure compliance with contract specifications, building codes and safety regulations. Should have knowledge of the RFP process. 
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License, clean driving record and ability to drive a manual transmission is required.

  • Skilled in using personal computer and Microsoft office suite
  • Knowledgeable in one or more of the following areas preferred: thermodynamics, electrical high voltage systems, SCADA, GIS, asset management
  • Proven ability to produce system heat balances for the purpose of identifying economic dispatch of primary equipment and or direct others parties in the building of system simulation models for the purpose of strategic design and equipment selection
  • Well rounded knowledge of building HVAC systems and secondary electrical systems
  • A proven knowledge of control and monitoring systems with proven ability to utilize data extraction for the purpose of enhanced facility management
  • A strong commitment to safety
  • An understanding of generation protection and control systems
  • A current working knowledge of district energy utilities and systems including thermal, electrical distribution, natural gas, water and wastewater
