Eversource Opens State-of-the-Art Training Center

October 4, 2017

Just as Eversource routinely invests in its gas and electric distribution systems to provide customers with safe and reliable energy, the company is also committed to the excellence of its workforce. Eversource unveiled a new, $2.7 million state-of-the-art training center at its Berlin campus. The five-acre facility includes indoor and outdoor training areas where electric lineworkers and natural gas technicians will gain certifications and skills.

"We're always working to better serve our customers and a well-trained workforce is critical in accomplishing that goal," said Eversource Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Judge. "Safety is at the core of everything we do and our new training facility featuring real-world, outdoor training areas gives lineworkers and gas technicians invaluable hands-on experience and the opportunity to work with equipment in a safe and controlled environment before encountering it in the field."

Eversource lineworkers will hone skills such as pole climbing, working on energized and de-energized lines, pole-top lineman rescue, transformer installation and troubleshooting. In addition to standard 35-foot utility poles, some poles are set at medium and low heights to allow instructors to work closely with employees.

The natural gas training area, designed as a residential neighborhood with houses, sidewalks, yards and paved streets, provides a safe and authentic space for gas field workers to gain hands-on experience. Natural gas technicians will engage in various real-life situations under controlled conditions, ranging from gas emergencies to meter installations to underground inspections.

Indoor classrooms will be used for ongoing safety lessons for employees, who range from veteran lineworkers to brand-new technicians and apprentices during various stages of training.
