Delmarva Power Supports New Energy Efficient System at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center

September 12, 2017

With the flip of a switch, on Aug. 18, the Peninsula Regional Medical Center brought a new combined heat and power system online. Doing so means lower costs, increased sustainability, greater energy efficiency, and a smaller carbon footprint.

Owned and operated by Unison Energy, the state-of-the-art combined system is expected to save the hospital $2 million through EmPOWER Maryland, an incentive program from Delmarva Power and the Maryland Energy Administration. It will offset more than 80 percent of Peninsula Regional's energy consumption, and the center's leadership told The Source it will reduce the medical campus' annual CO2 emissions by more than half.

As a major power consumer in the area, updating how the Peninsula Regional Medical Center keeps the lights and heat on is absolutely essential - for the hospital, Delmarva Power, the Maryland Energy Administration, and Unison Energy, the company that will operate and maintain the combined heat and power system.

Officials from Unison Energy said the project will supply the majority of the hospital's electricity and thermal needs, drive down the overall demand on the local power grid, and, most significantly, shrink the center's costs of doing business - creating savings that can be passed on to patients and families.

"We are honored to partner with Unison Energy and the state of Maryland in bringing a sustainable project online that will help Peninsula Regional save money and reduce its carbon footprint," said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings, parent company of Delmarva Power. "This Medical Center is an absolutely vital resource and driver of good civic and public health in the region."
