Vianna signs agreement with the giant China Three Gorges Corporation in Beijing
Brazilian Director General of Itaipu to serve on official committee of the Ministry of Mines and Energy for the 9th Summit of BRICS

September 1, 2017

Luiz Fernando Leone Vianna, Brazilian Director General of Itaipu, is signing a cooperation agreement in Beijing, this Friday, September 1, with China Three Gorges Corporation. The ceremony will be attended by the President of Brazil, Michel Temer.

Vianna is serving on the official committee of the Minister of Mines and Energy, Fernando Coelho Filho, who is taking part in the 9th Summit of BRICS, a block consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Prior to the meeting, a number of bilateral meetings are expected between the two presidents and officials of Brazil and China, which is now Brazil's largest trading partner. President Temer is traveling accompanied by ministers, governors and legislators.

China Three Gorges Corporation is a holding company that controls a number of Chinese power plants.  Among them is the Three Gorges plant, the largest in the world in terms of installed capacity. For the generation of clean and renewable energy, Itaipu is the largest on the planet, with record production of 103.1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2016, a level that it will be difficult for any other generator of electricity to surpass.

The agreement between Itaipu and China Three Gorges Corporation calls for holding technical seminars to exchange knowledge on operational issues, industry seminars, internships for young engineers, research projects to strengthen technological facilities and cooperation on social responsibility and regional development projects.

The document of cooperation strengthens the good relationship that Itaipu already has with the Chinese holding company. Over the course of construction and implementation of the Itaipu generating units -- and even during the preliminary studies -- a number of groups of Chinese engineers have come to Brazil to become familiar with the bi-national company and learn about the process that gave rise to this undertaking between the two countries.

On Saturday, September 2, the Brazilian Director General will take part in the seminar on Investment Opportunities in the Sectors of Infrastructure, Transport, Energy and Agribusiness, organized by the Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investment (Apex-Brasil - Agencia Brasileira de Promocao de Exportacoes e Investimentos). The gathering will bring together Chinese business leaders who are investing, or interested in investing, in Brazil.

BRICS Summit

According to Alexandre Parola, spokesperson of the Office of the President of the Republic, President Michel Temer sees in BRICS a privileged space for economic cooperation, in particular in financial matters.
