Eversource's Main Street Energy Efficiency Program Brings Powerful Savings to Springfield's Mason Square

Aug 14, 2017

Eversource's Main Street Energy Efficiency Program is providing energy-saving upgrades to shops, offices and restaurants along the State Street Corridor - in the heart of Mason Square - one of Springfield's oldest historic neighborhoods. Clarence Smith has been running his local barbershop for 12 years and says this program gave his business a much needed boost.

"Eversource's Main Street Program is giving us the benefit of being energy efficient and brightens up the business with better lighting and lower electric bills," said Final Touch Barbershop owner Clarence Smith. "We do a lot of community events here in this barbershop and now our business looks better, brighter and more modern and we're thankful for that."

There are 33 small businesses in the State Street and Boston Road area qualifying for the more than a quarter-of-a-million dollars of energy efficiency upgrades at no cost to the owners. The average savings is estimated between $600 and $1,000 a year in energy costs. Together these businesses will save more than 355,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, the equivalent of taking 50 cars off the road a year.

"We have a long-standing partnership with the City of Springfield, helping the city and its residents save money through innovative energy efficiency programs," said Eversource Vice President of Energy Efficiency, Tilak Subrahmanian. "We're especially proud of what our Main Street program is accomplishing in cities and towns across Massachusetts and are confident Springfield small business owners will enjoy significant savings as well."

The Main Street Energy Efficiency program begins with a no-cost energy assessment. Based on the results of this walk-through assessment, upgrades - offered at no-cost to the participating businesses - may include new lighting, occupancy sensors, programmable thermostats and water saving devices.

Eversource's program is a complete turnkey service. The energy company's pre-approved contractors will make all the necessary arrangements for the installation of efficiency upgrades at participating businesses. Licensed electricians will perform the installations using quality materials, backed by a full guarantee.

Eversource's Main Street Energy Efficiency Program has already helped well over 100 small businesses in communities across Western Mass including Easthampton, West Springfield, Greenfield, Pittsfield and Springfield's South End, at no cost to the business owners.

Eversource is also in the process of bringing the Main Street Energy Efficiency Program back to Pittsfield and outreach to small businesses has already begun.

Eversource (NYSE: ES) transmits and delivers electricity and natural gas to 1.7 million customers throughout Massachusetts, including approximately 1.4 million electric customers in 140 communities and 300,000 gas customers in 51 communities. Recognized as the top U.S. utility for its energy efficiency programs by the sustainability advocacy organization Ceres, Eversource harnesses the commitment of its approximately 8,000 employees across three states to build a single, united company around the mission of safely delivering reliable energy and superior customer service.
