NRC Names New Senior Resident Inspector at Robinson Nuclear Power Plant

Aug 8, 2017

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have named Jeff Rotton as the agency's senior resident inspector at Duke Energy's Robinson nuclear power plant, located near Hartsville, S.C., about 26 miles northwest of Florence.

Rotton joined the NRC in 2003 as a headquarters operations officer in the agency's Operations Center in Rockville, Md. In 2008, he transferred to the NRC Region IV office in Arlington, Texas, and served as the resident inspector for four years at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville, Ark. Rotton returned to NRC headquarters in 2012 as a reliability and risk analyst in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation's Division of Risk Assessment, before transferring back to the Operations Center in 2013 for his second tour as a headquarters operations officer.

Before joining the NRC, Rotton served 12 years in the U.S. Navy and earned the qualification of engineering officer on nuclear submarines. After leaving the Navy, he spent 17 years in the commercial nuclear industry where he worked in nuclear plant construction and startup for General Electric, and as a consultant providing preventative maintenance program optimization, outage risk assessment, process redesign, and maintenance rule program implementation to various nuclear utilities.

Rotton holds two boiling water reactor senior reactor operator certifications and previously held an NRC senior reactor operator license for fuel handling.

Rotton graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.

"Jeff Rotton has a broad range of professional experience and a record of dedication to nuclear safety. In this role, he will help ensure that the Robinson plant meets the NRC's stringent safety requirements," said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney.

At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at one site for up to seven years.

The NRC resident inspectors at the Robinson site can be reached at 843-383-4571.
