NRC Names New Senior Resident Inspector at Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant

Aug 8, 2017

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have named Galen Smith as the agency's senior resident inspector at Duke Energy's Brunswick nuclear power plant, located near Southport, North Carolina, about 30 miles south of Wilmington.

Smith joined the agency's Region I office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in 2001. Prior to his assignment at the Brunswick plant, Smith was the resident inspector at the Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania, the senior resident inspector at the Nuclear Fuel Services facility and the Sequoyah nuclear plant, both in Tennessee.

Smith earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Duke University and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida. He also holds a graduate certificate in nuclear criticality safety from the University of Tennessee. His experience prior to joining the NRC included stints as an operations manager for Lucent Technologies, a control room supervisor at a nuclear power plant, and a U.S. Navy submarine officer serving on the USS Bergall.

Smith is also a licensed professional engineer in the state of Florida and was an NRC-licensed senior reactor operator at the St. Lucie nuclear plant in Florida.

"Galen Smith brings many years of experience and a strong safety commitment to his senior resident role at the Brunswick plant, helping ensure that it continues to operate safely," said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney.

At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at one site for up to seven years.
The NRC resident inspectors at the Brunswick site can be reached at 910-457-9531.
