Eversource Begins Use of Specialized Distance-Measuring Technology for Vegetation Inspections in Massachusetts

May 29, 2017

Using a specialized pickup truck mounted with distance-measuring equipment, Eversource is collecting real-time data about the relationship between tree limbs and electric lines in its Massachusetts service area. The pilot program aims to further improve electric service reliability by proactively addressing encroachment from trees along the company's street-side electrical circuits.

"Testing the benefits of this advanced technology is something we're very excited about and hope to replicate in other parts of our service area," said Steve Driscoll, Vice President of Operation Services at Eversource  "With over a million customers in Massachusetts depending on us for reliable electric service, we know how important it is to stay ahead of potential tree-related issues on our system."

The pickup truck will use laser technology to scan the specific location of trees along or near roads where power lines run in Eversource's Massachusetts service area. The company will then analyze the data to determine how best to minimize the threat of vegetation impacting the electric system.

The inspections, which began today in Bedford, will continue through early July. The vehicle will be operating from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. as it moves through the northern part of Eversource's Eastern Mass. service area, heading south to Greater New Bedford and Cape Cod, before completing the first phase of the survey in MetroWest communities. The survey work with then move to Eversource's Western Mass. service area.
