Bruce Power names Swagelok Southwestern Ontario as partner for life-extension work that continues to produce low-cost power

March 17, 2017

Bruce A

Bruce Power and Swagelok Southwestern Ontario have entered into an agreement valued at more than $1.5 million for new valves for Bruce Power's Life-Extension Program.

The contract is for an order of nearly 400 new valves for the site's fuel handling trolleys. In total, 160 valves will be replaced in Bruce A and 208 in Bruce B. The new valves will be instrumental in maintaining the reliability of the trolleys, which deliver and insert new fuel into the reactors, while removing used fuel for safe, long-term storage.

"These new valves are an important part of the life-extension maintenance program for the trolleys, and will add another 40 years to their life expectancy," said Steve Russett, Project Manager, Bruce Power.

Bruce Power supplies 30 per cent of Ontario's energy at 30 per cent less than the average residential price. Extending the life of the Bruce Power site will ensure decades of low-cost, reliable, baseload electricity for Ontario families and businesses. The Unit 6 Major Component Replacement Project gets underway in 2020 and is part of Bruce Power's Life-Extension Program, which began in 2016 and will extend the life of the Bruce site until 2064.

"We are pleased to continue our long standing relationship with Bruce Power with the supply of these key components for the Life-Extension Program," said John Haasen, President, Swagelok Southwestern Ontario. "Collaboration with Bruce Power has helped us ensure a long-term supply of valve requirements at reduced costs and supports the employment of 21 highly skilled staff at our Sarnia facility, while contributing to an important infrastructure project for the people of Ontario."

"I am pleased to see this contract go forward between Swagelok Southwestern Ontario and Bruce Power for the Life Extension Program," said Bob Bailey, Member of Provincial Parliament for Sarnia-Lambton. "Swagelok Southwestern Ontario is a valued employer and supplier to Sarnia-Lambton's chemical and refinery business, as well as the nuclear industry in Ontario."

"This is another fine example of Sarnia Lambton's expertise creating jobs and supporting critical industries. I congratulate Swagelok Southwestern Ontario and Bruce Power on this important announcement." said, Marilyn Gladu, Member of Parliament for Sarnia-Lambton.
