Description

The Electrical & Mechanical Laboratories, located in Chicago, IL, are responsible for testing of new and existing products for S&C's development groups and for outside customers. The Power Laboratory has capability of momentary testing up to 100 kA and interrupting testing from 15 to 210 kV utilizing 1700 MVA short circuit generators. The High Voltage Laboratory can test up to 800 kV AC and 1.6 million Volts impulse.  In addition, the labs have continuous current, time-current and mechanical and environmental test facilities.  The Power Laboratory, High Voltage Laboratory and the continuous current labs are accredited under the ISO 17025 for testing competency. In this position, you will report to the Manager-Electrical & Mechanical Laboratories.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performing the duties of the ISO 17025 technical manager including developing test methods, data analysis, test plans, and Quality Management System (QMS) documents.
  • Develop new test methods based on customer requirements and global and local standards.
  • Designing, simulating and troubleshooting high voltage and high power circuits.
  • Design, setup, execute laboratory test including documenting, evaluating, and reporting test results in a certified test report.
  • Determine and maintain the uncertainties of measurement of laboratory data acquisition equipment.
  • Writing functional specifications, hardware test plans, design documentation, and training documentation for laboratory test equipment required to meet global and local standards.
  • Providing engineering support for laboratory test engineers in the form of circuit design and circuit tuning software tools.
  • Working with IEEE and IEC standards groups to provide practical testing requirements for their standards development
  • Work with Short Circuit Testing Liaison of the Nations of the Americas (STLNA) and the Short Circuit Liaison (STL) to develop guides for the harmonization of testing among power laboratories.
Requirements

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering required. MS degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years' experience with high voltage or high power circuits.
  • Strong desire of bringing a quality service to our customers on time and within budget.
  • Experience with medium or high voltage switchgear.
  • Experience with IEEE and IEC switchgear test standards.
  • Proficiency with relevant lab instrumentation (scopes, DMMs, high voltage and high current measurements, etc.).
  • Must be self-motivated, well organized, and productive with minimal direct supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer transient analysis for modeling laboratory circuits.

Relevant Experience Required:

  • Five years' experience with high voltage or high power circuits, 10+ years of experience overall, leadership experience a plus.

  • Standing: Occasional standing for work on complete control assemblies
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of controls and test equipment, less than 50 pounds
  • Walking: Occasional walking throughout the facility
  • Carrying: Occasional carrying of light objects
  • Pushing: Infrequent pushing of objects, possibly related to rearrangement work
  • Pulling: Infrequent pulling of objects, possibly related to rearrangement work
  • Bending: Occasional bending during access to equipment
  • Reaching: Infrequent reaching
  • Handling: Frequent handling of parts or tools
  • Environment: Frequent use of personal computer, keyboard, and monitor, lab tools, etc. Occasional working in unconditioned high voltage equipment areas
